I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota 4x4 3.9 v-6 5 spd manual Trans. I had the very same kind of coolant leak. Passenger side, back by bell housing. Just could not locate it, without puting it up on a hoist. The problem was a bad frost plug, and this one was directly behind the engine mount. Had to loosen up mount plus the front end too. Ended up putting in heater plug, because there was no room to pound replacement frost plug in. Very labor intensive. Cost me about $300.00 when all said and done. Good luck!

steve, I think there is a couple of freeze plugs on the back of the block, I have an 88 and it has two in the back. If that's where its coming from it might be easier to pull the engine than the trans and tranfer case. Plus putting the clutch back in would be a little easier as well.
Just try to be sure its not one of the plugs at the rear on the side of the engine before you pull the engine. Or the trans&transfer case. I've done it both ways and its not easy to do either, then I would bet my 88 would be easier than your 96.
Good Luck

Yes there are two in the rear of the block ... and remember ... if one is leaking ... the others might be ready to as well... change all .. not just one ....
