Subject: Clacking sound when engine warm at idle?
IP: Logged

Message:
Can any experianced Dodge owners help with this? I have a 1994 Dakota 4x4 ext cab 3.9L v6 Auto has 174 thou kms on it its in imaculate shape. But the Engine makes a clacking sound but only at idle and only when it warms up?When you speed it up it goes away and does not do this when engine cold.My friend builds dodge engines about 40 a year and used to work for Dodge as a mechanic. He says its the roller rockers + lifters that make this noise in some of the older Dak 3.9s and not to worry about it.If i take care of it it should go for 350 thou kms min! Some people on other boards said its the timeing chain and there is a fix for it .I dont think its the chain as in that year this engine had a Double roller timeing chain and they last for ever. Also the orig owner of this Dak said this truck did this right from new.Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.Yours truely shrewster?

I have a 93 with 144,000 miles and it does the same thing. I have pulled the valve covers and checked and it is in the valve train. The timeing chain I replaced about 8,000 miles back, so I know it's not in that area. I am considering replacing the cam with a perdormance one and putting stronger springs on the valves. I will probably put new rockers on at the same time. That should kill the noise.

i have a '95 slt club cab with 125,000 miles. mine does the same thing. i isolated the sound to the center point of the front of the engine. i went to get parts today and the mechanic at the dealer was pretty good to me. he said what stretches the timing chain is that most people put too much oil in the case. it only needs 4.5qts to fill up. he said the crank shaft labors to much and stretches the timing chain cause its the weakest link. that explains my crazy oil pressure and the fact that this will be my third timing chain and i also go to jiffy lube.

Question: On the Daks does the oil pump run off the camshaft (Timing gear) like in the Chevy V8s, or directly off the crank?

If it's off the cam... well, I guess if there was too much oil (or too thick), the oil pump might have to work harder (and have higher pressure), which _might_ streach the chain over a long period of time... maybe...

everyone check for a loose exhaust manifold. I had a stud break off and another stud works loose about every 15000 miles so check it out

My 95 V6 does the same thing. i'ts made the noise since new. I now have 120'000 miles. Many folks some Dodge Techs say It's the lifters. I'ts fairly common on the 3.9, and as long as you keep good clean oil in it and change oil and filter regularly you should be ok. BTW, anyone interested in starting a high mileage forum? for those of us who choose to get our moneys worth out of a vehicle.

I have a '91 with greater than 110,000 miles, which means the odometer was replaced at some unknown (to me) point.

The "clacking" noise I have encountered is related to the thermostatic fan clutch. I removed the clutch temporarily as a test and the noise disappeared. A heavy duty replacement would cost approx. $90 but not necessary at this time. Total failure will get much noisier especially if it locks up.

I own 97 39L and it has a very loud clacking at idle. I have put on a K&N filter which made it only louder and one sevice station told me it was an exhaust leak, but the next mechanic didnt even comment on it.I have always felt it was a lifter, but have largely ignored it.I have 50,000 miles on it and have only used MobileOne oil in it.

Timing Chain. All the other is Dealership B.S.
Dodge has a TSB out for all 3.9 engines. Because
it is a cut off 318, with 90 degree vee, the
engine does not have good primary or secondary
balance. The standard V-8 never rattles the
timing chain because it runs much smoother. A
correct V-6 has a 60 degree Vee. The fix is a
tensioner that replaces the thrust plate between
the cam gear and the block. The local dodge
dealer will not tell you this, because they are
all stupid. I plan to pull the 3.9 and install a
HO 502/502 Chevy crate engine in my 4X4 97

Where do you find the tensioner that replaces the thrust plate? I am with you. I have read that this is a common problem but I cant find the part to fix it!

Just bought a 2002 Dakota C/C 4x2 with the 3.9L engine. The engine rattled right from the drive off the lot and I took it back and they took the engine apart and found that one of the rocker arms was installed wrong from the factory. It's nice to know that you spend hard earned money on shabby workmanship. At least it's covered by the warranty, but I feel sorry for those people who have driven around all this time and don't realize what the problem really is.

Shrewster...
I'm on my Second Dak/3.9 My first on started doing that right off the lot, the second is just starting to do it. My '95 needed a timing chain and a cam and lifter set to make things right, but that was after 110,000 miles, The '99 has only 75,000 miles on it, so I hope it doesn't need the same. I hope this has not depressed you. Also, I have a Question, if anyone can answer it. When going down the road, under light load, engine running 1800-2150RPM when the throttle is mashed, the top end of the engine rattles. sounds like maybe the valve train. Any Thoughts or Ideas?

DW, When they looked further into my engine problem with clacking around 1800 rpm, they found out that the roller bearings were all worn out pre-maturely. Something was installed wrong at the factory the engine was hooped after 1000 kms. New engine is on it's way from Toronto though. Maybe a Canadian made one will be better than the one from Detroit.

My 2001 quad started this crap at 5000 miles
and I put 12oz of Lucas heavy duty oil
stabilizer in that stopped the noise pronto. I
have since switched to amazol extended
range synthetic oil and have no noise.
I also think that the overfilling of the crank case
streatching the timing chain is crap also.
Think about it. Unless the bearing on the nose
of the crank is worn out there is no way the
crank could lower enough to streatch the
chain.

I have a 97 with 50,000 miles, bought it with 48,000. It has the timing chain slap at idle, warm or cold. One dealer says replace it, the dealer that has the warranty says they all do it so they will not replace the chain. I am going for another opinion, if that one says change it I will have it done then contact a lawyer to recover my expenses. truck came with a 45 day unlimited mileage warranty. What will happen if left as is?

If you have a 3.9L V6, HAVE THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER INSTALLED!! I ran a copy of the "Magnum V6 - Timing Chain TSB" (found on SpeedTweaks - Tips and Tricks webpage). Gave it to the dealer service rep when I dropped off my '92 V6 Dakota at 80,000 miles. They installed the tensioner as detailed in the TSB and BINGO! This is the first time my truck has not rattled! The truck has had a clacking/clicking noise since new - I always thought it was lifter/rocker noise. The fix was not under warrenty, so it cost me $390.00, but IMHO, it was WELL WORTH IT! Very quite - at last!
Thanks!

Can anyone tell me where the fuel filter is located on a 94 Dodge Dakota V6 Automatic? Also, has anyone experienced the engine stalling frequently? I thought maybe if I changed the filter, this might help. Any suggestions?
