Almost everyone has trouble with Dodge's auto. They simple can't build a good automatic trany.

Entitled to your opinion but I beg to differ.

727 are one of the most rock solid trannys out and 518's are based on em.

I have had 904, 727 and 500 and have had excellent luck with em all.

Almost all auto trannys are pretty decent what usually craps em out is poor or lack of maintenance.

Auto;s get hot damn hot and need regular service and a lot of people forget that

Dont get me wrong, there are lemons out their but the worst luck I have ever had was Ford auto's in particular OD's.

Depends on the year.

Early Daks with OD are A500 and A518's.
Later are 42 44 and 46 Re's.

All are based on the early 727 and 904 but as they got newer they have more and more electronic control.

My Dak has 123k on it and I got it with 98K, I have no idea if its ever been rebuilt but it has cooperated flawlessly to all the mods and abuse I dish out to my truck (and thats ALOT).

I understand Dodge has a reliability issue with there 5 spds but not so much with their autos.

Can you tell I'm an auto believer? lol

I have had 6 second (1/8th mile) big blocks, one with 4 spd and one auto, I prefer auto built up right hands down.

Good point Fazdak.
I have a 92 w/trany cooler and 116K miles on it. This is what it is doing...
When I go up hills in O/D, not just steep ones, even small hills, the rpms jump from 1700 to 2100 w/o down shifting. Why?
Another problem, if I take off fast and then let out of the gas a little at about 35mph it has a lot of trouble finding second gear. It's almost like the trany is going "where the...damit...is that...no... crap...there it is"
Why is that happening and how do I fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not real sure but I'll bet it can be figured out by year and engine.

I know that early Daks up to about 96 had A500 or A518 after that I'm guessin 42RE for V6'ers and some V8's and 44 or 46 for all other V8 and HD trucks (tow packages ans so forth).

Just what I think and I could be wrong.
If you wanna know for sure ask a parts guy at a dealer, they will be able to tell ya I would think.

Montag, that post looks familar? lol

Have you noticed any power loss from your Dak, I have seen a similar problem and it turned out to be a vacume line punctured (or off of course).
This decreases your enegine Tq substaintially and if it just happened to you suddlenly I would guess its something along that lines.

Of course check all vac lines and try and remember if it started doing that sometime after you were under the hood and back trace all that you touched.

Your tranny will have to go to a lower gear on small grades because it cant find the power to keep the set speed to stay in the current gear on that grade.

Hope that helped, Scott

No loss in power that I have noticed. It has been doing this ever since I got it about 6 months ago. I'm wondering if getting a shift kit will fix it? When go up hills it doesn't down shift, more like it's slipping. It will down shift if I give it more gas, but when the rpm's jump from 1700 to 2100 it's still in O/D.
