Thought I would ask....

98 Dakota, 4 wheel drive...purchased the truck in January of this year and just noticed that the steering wheel does not lock right when you remove the key.

When the key is removed, you can still turn the wheel in either direction and at some point it will eventally lock. I was wondering if this was normal...anyone else have this problem and is it an easy fix with the airbag in the steering wheel.

Thanks for any help.

Mark

i have a 94 dak genII, and i have the same problem. it started when the dealer that i bought the trk from was supposed to do recall work on my steering wheel. after they did the work i had the same problem u are having. come to find out they never did replace the steering wheel so i dont know what they did. i am taking it to another dealer on may 21st to have the original recall work done (replace the steering wheel and ill see if that fixes the locking or the steering and let u know. u could ck tsb's on ur trk and see if there is any on ur particular problem.

intensedak39, thats how my problem started. it didnt happen all at once. for a while i had to move the steering far right or left to get it to lock, now it does not lock at all. so as i said i hope replacing the steering wheel will fix the problem cause i mentioned to this present dealer that my steering would no longer lock.

i can only think of it actually happening to me a couple of times (or at least when i noticed). The last time (a couple of months ago), I turned the wheel over a full turn without it engaging. Now if i remember correctly and its like my last two chrysler products... there is a plate in the steering wheel with holes drilled around it. Under that is another plate with a little "pop-up" button that engages when you turn the ignition off. When you rotate the wheel the "button" pops into one of the wholes. Now i have never taken my steering wheel apart to notice it because i really dont mind it but just let you know how it works so you can maybe figure it out.

Thanks for the info guys. I just thought it was rather odd that I had to turn the wheel either all the way to the right or all the way to the left to get it to lock. Out of all the cars I have ever owned, this truck is the only one I have ever encountered that did this.

Never thought to call the dealer to see if there is a recall on this. I guess it wouldn't hurt.

Thanks for the info.

just to follow up on steering wheel lock, the dealer replaced the steering and cked on the lock problem. the service manager told me there was no locking parts in my trk. and said that only automatic trks had that feature. i showed him a copy of the page on my manual that said my trk has the locking feature and that it locked when it was new and failed to work after the other dealer had worked on the recall of the steering wheel, which they never completed. my present dealer gave me no diffinative answer as he said there was no locking parts in the steering. i have to get schematic of the parts that are supposed to be in the truck and show them to the dealer. what a bummer ;(
