'98 Sport. 5 spd manual.
I was helping a friend move, and took off on the entrance ramp to freeway, and engine lost all power, got really loud, and then quit. After a few minutes I got it started again (think it flooded), but when I gave it gas, it sounded like the exhaust was getting backed up into intake manifold....almost like exhaust headers had a crack. It idles fine, but revving to 2K will make it stumble and spurt and almost quit, and you can smell fuel. When under a load, you can't get it 2K rpm before it starts acting up (maybe 5 mph in 1st).
The cat. has been rattling for about 2 weeks now. I think I remember reading someone else on here had the cat. crack or do something and had similiar results...searched but could not find the post. Had to get it towed in and it is still under warrenty. Anyone have any ideas? Or similiar experience?
My theory(just a theory)...cat. is hosed, plugging up exhaust pipe, backin it up into intake, O2 sensor is getting super hot from slow exhaust flow and is telling comp. it is running too lean..I don't know. Any info I can take to dealer will help me I think. Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the cat broke up inside and you have pieces blocking the exhaust flow. The symptoms you described sound like what I suffered with my old Mazda pick-up when that cat broke up.

The dealership should replace the cat (if that's what it is) free of charge as they have an 80K mile federal emissions warranty.
