Ok guys I really need some help. I have a 99 3.9 Dakota with just over 100,000 miles. I had problems with it misfiring around 45 mph so I changed the cap rotor wires and plugs to no avail. I have noticed that it does it more often when I hit bumps in the road. Could something be loose that's causing the misfire? And if so, what could it be? Also, I have noticed lately that sometimes it won't shift from 1st to 2nd unless you let off the gas. Any ideas what might cause this? Any helpful comments will be greatly appreciated.

Yes Matt. I took it too Napa Saturday and they scanned it and told me the solenoid threw a code. I'm going to try to replace it myself soon. As far as the misfiring, no codes showed up. The Napa guy said it might be the coil but I'm not so sure. It only misfires around 45 and up. If it was the coil it seems like it would be misfiring all the time.

I had some serious misfiring with other symptoms on my 98
3.9... Took multiple things to fix it. The PCM and crank sensor
did the most good as the truck doesn't buck or anything like it
used to. I've had to change the Cat and it didn't throw a code
for a while even though i knew it was bad. My crank sensor
didn't throw a code till i fixed the cat. My misfire codes were
P0300 P0301 P0303 P0305 ... Do you have any other
symptoms? Backfiring, engine cut offs, hard starts etc?

Thank you 98kotaT. No the tach just bounces around 45 mph. It seems worse when I hit bumps. I had the cat replaced about a year ago and its already gone bad and it throws a code. It starts easily,no backfires but the engine does seem to cut out a little when misfiring. You can definitely feel it 45 mph and up.

Could be a camshaft position sensor.. Its located in the actual
distributor... I don't know why dodge put it there but if its loose
it can cause a misfire on the bumps you mentioned. Also, with
your shifting issue, check and make sure your transmission
fluid isn't low first - make sure the truck is running when you
pull the stick, if it's not I would test the TPS which is on the
right side of the throttle body if you are looking at the engine
from the front. If its not that it may be a sensor on the actual
tranny.
Back to the cat - if the codes came back sort of soon then it
could just be an aftermarket cat.... They throw codes even if
they are alright. But if its been a year of misfires it could have
went bad again as well.. Do you feel any backpressure when
driving?

I'm not sure why my messages are posting all jacked up.... But
another thing you could do is get an electrical diagram and
make sure you have the right amount of grounds and they
aren't damaged. Not having enough grounds is the most
common cause for misfires.

Thanks for the info 98kotaT! I know the cat is bad because you can hear it rattle. Even shut off you can tap it and hear it. I just assumed if it threw a code for the solenoid in the trans that was the problem but Ill check the fluid level and the TPS this weekend. I really don't want to have to take the pan off and replace the solenoid if its something else. As far as the camshaft position sensor, can you tell me if its easy to get too? I have had the cap off to change it and the rotor but I don't recall anything else under there.

Theres a guy that has a video on youtube to help you through
the camshaft position sensor. Hes working on a 99 durango,
but its the same as dakotas. It's not a difficult job, finding it is
the hardest part.
As for the TPS, I accidentally forgot to plug it in once after I
cleaned my throttle body and the truck would not shift right at
all, so if it's damaged or anything it can cause rough riding. I'm
not completely sold on the dakotas code accuracy, hence why
so many people have the 1,3,5 misfires and can't figure them
out
