I bought a 1997 Dodge Dakota V6 3.9L a few
months ago, and almost immediately after buying
it, the engine light came on and is reporting
codes for misfires on cylinders 1, 3, and 5.

We've tried the "cigar" method and haven't been
able to identify any leaks, but we could be
doing it wrong.

We had a mechanic look at it and tell us our
distributor was bad. So we replaced the cap and
rotor.

We have replaced all spark plugs except for the
last one behind this disc we can't identify.
Need to get a wobble or something to access it.

Had a coworker tell me that we should replace
spark plug wires, or the crankshaft sensor. He
then also linked me to a service bulletin from
back in the day:
dodgeram.info/tsb/1998/18-48-98.htm but
says to do the crankshaft position sensor
first.

What do you all think? We're amateurs at this,
learning as we go, unsure of what to try next.
We won't clear VA Emissions until the codes are
clean.

What are you compression's? Not to uncommon for the valve seats in the 3.9 heads to develop small cracks setting lean codes and or sometimes misfire codes. I had a very small stumble that threw on the light and a slightly low reading on one cylinder. I took both heads to a trusted machine shop and they pressure checked them and found a small crack in one of the exhaust valve seats and on the other head a crack was just starting in a an intake valve seat. Set of new heads and knock on wood 7 years later no issues.

Dakota has the camshaft position sensor in the distributor..
Might wanna replace that too.... I've dealt with the 1,3,5
misfires for some time. Do you have any other issues or
symptoms or is it just throwing the codes? I had to do a
number of things to get rid of my issues... I would like to know
what exactly its doing to know if its similar. - btw to pass
emissions just clear the codes and as soon as it passes
through the phases send it to the shop for inspection before
the codes come on. I do it all the time in NC.

Mine did that for years and I found out my alarm system was doing it.I did away with my key fob and unhooked electric door locks. The passenger side door lock actuator turns off alarm system if you have no key fob.Its been a year no problem yet
