Here is an interesting set of data as i try to determine if i really
have a problem with overheating. hope with this data you can
assist.

Had a junk yard engine installed in this 98 Dakota. 3.9L
Runs terriffic

Heater core is bypassed due to leak. with a short hose at the
front of the system

It seemed to run cold for awhile below 180 but the truck has
been sitting
Then saw it was running hot

Replaced thermostat. 180degrees. ( old one was also 180)
Replaced Fan clutch and today, the radiator

purged air using funnel at filler, saw the coolant level drop ,
then added more. Cap seems ok as the hoses do hold
pressure. upper hose alternates from pressurized ( hard) to
squezzable as the coolant is sent to and from the resevior.

At idle. gauge is at 210. but drive short distance, it climbs up,
staying in the safe region. but it can spike toward 260.

using a handheld infrared temp gun from harbor freight, here is
what i found:
gauge reads midway. 210

thermometer readings
upper hose near neck 195

lower hose 125

base of thermostat housing at manifold. 215

heater core hose in bypass 205

base of throttle body on manifold 165

valve cover 175

top of water pump 170

manifold behind housing 185

drove a few miles. gauge jumps up to white line next to 260.
check gages light comes on. pull over. take temps again. this
time upper hose pressurized. read. 220 all the way across
upper hose .
thermost housing neck 230 ,behind on manifold 225. upper
radiator front nearest upper hose 180. at fill cap upper side
120. lower hose 150.

So i am thinking-
air still in system
bad temp sender
absense of a heater core is a problem

Thanks so much for assisting
-Dave

turned out to be the impeller was loose on its shaft. no noise
whatsoever with the old pump. Overheating issue resolved
