Subject: Replacement options for the Holley 6280
IP: Logged

Message:
I'm having the same issues that I have
seen countless other 1987-1988 Dakota
owners have had with the damnable Lean
Burn Holley 6280 2BBl. I'm looking to
replace the unit all together with
something else. Has anyone had good
success with installing and running the
Holley/Carter 1933A 2BBL, Holley 2300
2BBL, or the Holley 4422 2BBL? If anyone
has anyother 2BBL carb suggestions, I'm
open!

I removed the smog pump, so that's not an
issues to consider, but I would prefer an
option that has an electric choke and
cruise control compatible.

I replaced the 6280 with a 2280 on my 87 many years ago and I have passed all SF Bay Area smog tests since, about 8 to 10 of them. The problem with the 6280 is the mixture control solenoid, which has not been available as a replacement part for eons.

Anyway, I bought a NOS 2280 on eBay for $70. I had to modify the throttle body portion to get a suitable port for the EGR valve. The 6280 has a slot for that port and the version of the 2280 that I bought did not have a slot, so I cut one in with a hacksaw blade. I also had to modify the linkage, but that was no big deal. The truck runs great and like I said it passes smog, but barely. I have gotten as much as 21.7 mpg on the freeway with it. Around town it sucks... about 13 to 14 mpg, but the 6280 did not do much better.
