My 2001 dodge dakota 4x4 3.9 has been
destroying my wallet. I have no idea what
to check next. Any help would be
appreciated.
128,000mi. Cold start, idles good, feels
good for maybe a minute. Once warm it's
idling rough in park or at a stop in
drive. There is a serious loss of power
when driving, it's always feels just
chugging and trying to breath, and my mpg
has been around 6-8. At high rpms it is
blowing black smoke out of the exhaust. As
of now I have no codes, but the ones I
had when it started are
Sensor 1 bank 1 lean mixture
sensor 1 slow response
misfire cylinder 3
injector problem 2
injector problem 5
So far I've replaced the injectors, the
computer, the fuel pump, the upstream 02
sensor, the TPS, the pcv valve, air
filter, spark plugs and wires, coil.
Why am I running so rich??? What do I
check next? I don't have any more money
for this POS!

I'm just a fellow Dakota driver looking for advice to improve the operation of the automatic (malfunctioning)choke. Could this also be your problem, possibly, shutting off airflow?

I have a 96 Dakota 6 cyl, and 2 years back my was doing the same thing. As it turned out, I had changed the same items you did with no luck. Finally someone asked if I still had my catylytic convertor. Yeah, I think. Turns out I actually replaced it with a new one and when they showed me the junk coming out of the old one I was taken aback. The build up had turned to BIG chunks of coal like rock! I couldn't expel anything! Having no clean exhaust was keeping all that in the motor and killing it. After that...well...I'm still driving it at 160,000 ml.
