i have a 94 dakota 4x4 with 3.9L engine. the temperature started running high. it's not running hot or over heating but the temp gauge is showing half to 3/4 hot. i drained the radiator and put in new antifreeze and replaced the thermostat. didn't help. replaced the temp gauge sensor to no avail. i am going to try using a good flush to see if that helps. water pump doesn't seem to be making any noise nor be leaking. any other suggestions would be appreciated.

the fan appears to be working ok. i recently replaced the serpentine belt and made sure it was tight. the fan seems to be spinning freely. fuse(s)look ok. is there something else to check with the fan? any diagnostics?

Did you grab the fan, while the engine is off of course, and check for any wobble? The clutch could be going out. No air in the cooling system?

hey daddio. thats what i'm leaning towards..the clutch fan. there is no wabble, the fan doesn't spin freely, however it is hard to spin. you can't just spin the fan a turn or so as it is hard to turn. thoughts?

It should spin with some force. Maybe 5-10 pounds. When you
stop pushing it should stop spinning. That is normal. Im
leaning toward Daddios idea of air. sometimes it collects right
under the thermostat. you can drill a little hole in the
thermostat. like 1/16" - 3/32" to be sure no air gets caught
there. or to test it maybe run it without the thermostat and see
how warm it gets. be careful with those bolts though. the
manifold is aluminum

As Mark stated. It should take some force to spin the fan.
Especially when it's hot. That is when the clutch should be
engaging the fan.

i tried a new fan clutch, still didn't correct the issue. i replaced the water pump and low and behold, problem solved. would have been an easy fix if water had been gushing from it or bearings grinding. at any rate, overheating issue is gone. much thanks to all who took time to give input!
