 Subject: Transsmission problems

I have a 1997 V8 4x4 with an automatic transmission. Recently when I was driving to work I got about a mile away from my house the the RPMs spiked to 3500 or 4000 under normal acceleration but the truck started to slow down. So i turned my truck off then back on again and drove it home and it did the same thing right about the time I got home. I think i might be the transmission and hoping it is not. Anybody have an idea of what is wrong?
