Subject: check gages light

Message:
I have a 2000 Dakota 3.9L. After I replaced alternator the check
gages light goes on after the engine is about 2/3 warmed up. At
the same time the voltage gauge drops from about 13v to 8V.
I have checked the battery connections (good), the alternator
connections (good), fuses (appear good). There are no engine
error codes. THis pattern is consistent.
THe voltage reading across the battery terminals reads 12.2v
(engine off), and 11.8v (engine on).
I don't know what else to check.
Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Pull the altenator and have it checked. It sounds
like it is not putting out. It is either defective
or the voltage regulator is bad. the bad news is
that the regulator is built into the PCM.

Thanks for your suggestion. Unfortunately, that is now the least of
my concerns. I took a break from the current gage light problem &
started on the front shock replacement. How hard could that be?
Have done lots of shock absorber jobs. One of the bottom bolts
snapped off when I tried to take it off. THe nut holding it is either
welded onto the plate or its part of the plate. WOnderful!!!! I tried
using a vise grip to unscrew the remainder of the screw in the plate.
IT just turns without gripping. Now the truck is unmoveable until I
get the screw remnant off, which I have no idea how to do.
I feel truly cursed.
