Subject: 96 Dakota 3.9 cuts out or wont idle

Message:
Hello, I am having an issue with my 96 Dakota 3.9 4x4 IT will start up cold but once I drive it and stop and try to immediately restart it, it Will not want to idle unless I hold the gas down at a steady idle for about 15 seconds or so. then it will idle fine. Also it cut out on me while driving and I had to floor it and it took a second but then came back to life. Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

fuel pressure regulator, pump? maybe injectors need
cleaning sound like you need to rebuild fuel lines

It sounds like Idle Air Controller. There's more about this problem around the net well as this forum.

Not wanting to idle sounds like it would be IAC motor, but cutting out while driving may hint at TPS (throttle position sensor). You can search on this site or google how to test the TPS. How bout some more info-

does it cut out at a certain speed (other than idle) or at a certain position of the throttle?

Have you been having battery or charging issues lately?

Have you disconnected the battery lately?

Replacing the throttle position sensor cured this for me, several years ago. There were no fault codes. I believe it just develops intermittent contact spots inside the sensor.

Guys, Don't guess!
Start by checking for codes...

If no codes remove the TB, Then remove the IAC
from back of TB. Clean it carefully and the TB,
Get it back on the TB after cleaning and install
the TB with a new gasket.

This could also be a fuel pressure issue.
Check this with a pressure gauge attached to the
schrader valve on the fuel rail.

Hey thanks for all the replies! I just developed this issue right after cleaning the injectors on the driver side and replacing the cap and rotor also I synched the injectors. I dont have any codes anymore after cleaning the injectors I got rid of the miss i was having in 1 and 3 cyl. I replaced the IAC with a junkyard one. I think I am going to try to get to the junkyard today and get a used coil and TPS but this yard only has a 93 dakota I know the coil is the same from 90-97 but Ill have to check the TPS. I pulled a TPS from a newer dakota but the plug is different. Ill post back as soon as I get these things installed. I just went out and started it and shut it off several times and she started right back up. A couple times it sounded like it was missing but after I hit the gas and she went back down to idle it went away.

Ok so I went to the junkyard and got a coil a v8 throttle body with all the sensors I changed all the sensors one by one and when it still did the same thing I put mine back. I am still having that same problem.... Now I guess It could either be the Crank Pos Sensor or something in the distibutor?? Would synching the injectors too far cause this? I put the back edge of the rotor tip right at the edge of the cyl line I turned the dist counterclockwise.
