My heater core has a leak. I'm sure of it because I can smell it in my 1998 V6 Dakota club cab (330,000 miles) when I drive.
In the summer I just bypassed the heater core by getting a longer heater hose and going from the water pump to the return line. -No more Prestone smell in my truck! Now it's winter and I need it! I keep on reading the various posts about how hard it is to replace because you need to remove all kinds of crap to get to it.

My Question is: Is it possible to remove the plastic dashboard then carefully cut the metal portion of the dashboard away, exposing the core, and replace it through the hole? You could just pop the metal back on and smear some silicone over it to seal it when you're done, then replace the dashboard...like a surgery for your truck!
Do you guys think it would be worth doing?

Thanks in advance.

Relf.

No. If you're working on dash removal, might as well take it all the way.

The best way to change the heater core is to remove the dash. The process is less difficult than it sounds. Read the other threads in this forum and watch the handful of youtube videos.

You don't have to take it all the way out. Just far enough to unhinge and swing out of the way (lots of wires to unhook). The access is from the passenger side. I was even able to do it without disconnecting the AC line. There are a couple of screws on the firewall side of the box that will slow you down, just use a long wrench.
