Subject: Transmission or torque converter?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 1993 Dakota, v6, rwd, automatic (A500)

I've noticed that my truck makes a rattling noise when it's warmed up that sounds like a heat shield loose. I've checked the heat shields and they're solid. When the truck is cold this noise doesn't exist.

As far as I know it doesn't shift weird EXCEPT going from 1st to 2nd seems a lot firmer than going from any other gears.

The noise is really noticable when I'm stopped at a red light in gear. If I shift to neutral it stops instantly, then when I shift back it starts rattling again.

This has me convinced it's not an exhaust leak.

Also, I live in an area that has some EXTREMELY steep hills. If I go up them the rattle is really noticable then.

My problem is figuring out what is wrong. I'm not a trained mechanic but I'm pretty good at it. Does anyone have any ideas?

I'm leaning toward the torque converter than the transmission.

I would just like to know how screwed I am going to be soon lol

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it has 160,000 miles. If I forgot to mention anything else that might help please let me know.

Very possible that it's a cracked flex plate, which is what the torque converter attaches to. I know it's a problem with minivans in recent years. Not sure if you can inspect it with the transmission in the vehicle.

my 95 ,3.9 does the same thing, like a muffler clamp hanging loose. not there when its cold but only after it warms up. i thought it might be the timing chain.
