Subject: Alternator after alternator...

I have a 1993 dakota v6, rwd, 160,000. It doesn't have power locks, windows, and doesn't have a/c.

I replaced my stock aternaor (75 amps) in June. It sounded like the bearing was going bad. Since then I have replaced it 5 times with Duralast alternators. It's the "gold" one and they have all have been 90 amps . They've been under warranty so thankfully it's only cost me time instead of money.

I replaced the belt in August and the belt tensioner 2 years ago. The belt is tight. Also that battery is 8 days old "Duralast Gold"

I took it to autozone and it's says the alternator is fine on the computer, but it sounds like the bearing has gone bad, AND that's the problem with all of them (including the stock one).

I didn't think my luck was that bad to have 6 bearings go bad in 6 different alternators.

As a last note, the "bad bearing noise" isn't constant. It does it every time I drive it but it comes and goes.

Does anyone have any idea as to what the problem may be? It's really frustrating!

Sincerely,

Steven

I forgot to mention that it's an automatic transmission. I don't know if that would make a difference or not.

The problem is Duralast parts. I went through 3 rebuilt ones, one failing as early as 75 miles on the alternator for a bad bearing; another one, 200 miles. It was not belt tension, it was used junk. I went back the 3rd time and demanded a new alternator. They charged me $10 extra to upgrade. It ran fine for 1 1/2 years; but after I stripped the car for parts (it rusted out), the alternator seized up just from being stored in my (dry) basement.

Go OEM.
