Subject: New clutch - just as stiff as old
IP: Logged

Message:
My clutch has always been pretty stiff on a 4x4 5Sp 3.9L raised Dakota. I finally spent the $800 bucks to replace it - it was GREAT for about 3 days and now is just as stiff if not worse. Anyone have any ideas on why it worked great for a few days and is now back to the same? I basically spent $800 for 3 days of normal driving, and not it's just the same.

did you change the throw out bearing , if so then change the slave cylinder you may have contaminants in there partially stopping the fluid flow also chech the hose from the slave it may be collapsing too ,, good luck
and be sure to bleed it real good , no air needs to be in there

Hmmm. They should have replaced the throw out bearing - it should have came in the clutch kit. I will ask them about it when I take it in though.

NOW today I noticed that there is something that leaked all over the inside of the front drivers wheel well - towards the back of the tire. It looks like the same stuff leaked/got on the drivers side of the engine. Any ideas if this is related or what this could be? Nothing leaked on the other side.

Look at the outside of the clutch master cylinder to see if it is wet. They could have spilt fluid when they changed the clutch. The factory unit, master cylinder, hose and slave cylinder are one piece and cannot be bled. Make sure you don't have fluid leaking inside down the clutch pedal linkage also.

Thanks for the info guys.

Apparently the new clutch will take a while to break in - so they said it should get a little looser over time.

The oil/grease they found was coming from the axle - they have to replace it at $275. Seemed about right I guess, since I don't have a place or time to do my own work. I just hope this is the last repair for at least a few months.

It's time to bring it back to the shop, AGAIN.

Now the clutch pedal has a nice "spinning" feeling in it some of the time and I just don't feel like the replacement has done ANY good at all. Any suggestions as far as how to handle this is really appreciated.

Did they change the throwout bearing when they changed the clutch and pressure plate? You should always change those 3 pcs. as a set. And if time permits, true up the surface of the flywheel.

I called and asked them - they said they did replace it. I noticed that I only get the "spinning" or "pulses" some of the time, so I'm hoping they are able to recreate that on a long enough test drive, but with my luck they'll say they don't feel/find anything wrong.

They also said they were able to resurface the flywheel, so that should be all set.

I just can't believe how it went from feeling like a new clutch to feeling just like my old clutch or worse within a couple weeks after the replacement.
