and I don't like it. Sounds exactly like a wheel bearing going out, but it is related to the O/D...it goes away when the transmission is not running through the O/D.

the question is ( knowing nothing about transmissions ( particularly a 1997 dakota with the 3.9...I'm assuming a 42RE? ), is there a way to repair this as a DIY'er? Or, do I need to start looking for a replacement.

Well, the tranny sounds like a metal violin every 10 miles give or take...sounds like it's eating a needle from a needle bearing quite loudly. This is beyond anything I am capable of dealing with, unless it were something as easy as being able to unbolt the overdrive/tailshaft and fixing it without pulling the entire tranny.

From my reading, I'm sitting on a 42RE tranny. Of course, I'm playing hell trying to find a used one. The larger problem is, I'm only looking for a 42RE tranny from a dakota. What other donor tranny would fit my truck...I've had a hard time finding a chart or info that would cross reference a tranny swap between vehicles, other than reading that the 42RE shifts tighter than the 44RE, from which all I can ascertain the difference is, is an extra set of clutch disks for added strength behind the V8's.

I'm getting to the point where I'm going to sell the truck cheap and buy an AWD Astro, at least I know I can find those transmissions just about everywhere.

Can't disagree with you, I would too, but the truck has gotten too small for my future needs, and I found a nice Astro with 110,000 miles on the motor, about 10k on the tranny and it's much nicer than my truck IMHO. Oh, the engine isn't the 4.3, it's a 350 Vortec out of a Savanna van, and the transfer case is a push button 4x4 out of a trailblazer....drove it today, very cool...260hp and gets 18mpg, which is better than my Dak got on a good day.
