 Subject: Coil spring cushions

I'm putting my stock control arms back on and I can't
remember if I put the cushions for the springs on when I did
it. I just wanted to get your guys input on having them. I know
they aren't essential but Im wondering if they have a bigger
purpose then just keep the coil from scratching up the arm

They are definitely not in there just to stop the springs from scratching the up the arms. What happens when metal on metal keeps constantly grinding together? It groans, squeaks, wears, etc....
