Subject: Engine Dies At Highway Speeds
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 87 Dakota 4x4 with the 3.9L and recently
have been having a odd problem. As I'm driving
down the road, the engine will straight out die.
Sometimes it will fire back up by itself, other
times I have to pull over and fire her back up.
There's always a plume of smoke, then smooth
sailing. Any ideas? It's got no catalytic
converter, new fuel filter, air filter, etc.

P.S. - It tends to only happen when it hasn't
fully warmed up.

Check fault codes.

Often this is the distributor pickup, or the crankshaft position sensor. They are common failure points and can cause this. The fault codes may help lead you to the correct one.

Hey whats up man, i have a 87 dakota 4x4 myself, back when i first got it, i had a similar stalling problem, changed the fuel pump, cleaned the carb everything, with no success. So Someone mentioned to me that the sending unit lines could be bad.

So i popped off my bed, and sure enough, the metal tubes coming from the sending unit had a few holes in it, so while driving down the road, i would suck air into the lines and it would cause it to stall out. I ended up just cutting off what was bad put some new lines in, and made them snug all the way flush so it cant happen again, and it has been fine every since.
