first off a little info on the truck. bought it with a rod knock dropped in a new Marshall long-block. All parts were cleaned meticulously and reassembled. had to change the fuel pump due to hard starting. the problem Im having now is almost every time I start it cold it dies after about a minute at idle. after I restart it it does fine. Ive cleaned the iac valve but didn't help. any suggestions.

Chuck, there are a few things that can cause your problem, I think the first place I would look is check the codes to see if any are in the computer then the altanator, check the connections, be sure they are clean and tight. I know that sounds odd, but it can cause the problem you are having. Is it still hard to start? If you rev it up a little after it starts what happens then? When it dies does it restart easily? I don't have any other ideas just now, let us know whats going on if you would please.

Thanks for the reply dakota49. the truck hasn't sent any codes after the new engine went in, all the connections are good on the engine and after I put the new fuel pump in the truck starts right up every time now and when it does die it starts right back up. whats weird is it doesn't do it every time just when its started cold in the morning. I'm thinking maybe the TPS or IAC is going bad.

Chuck take your battery out and get it load tested. What you desribe can be caused by a weak battery. Yes, it will turn the engine over but be weak enough for the PCM to lose idle memory on a cold start.
