Subject: Dead truck??? Pls help
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 92 dodge dakota v6 magnum, and one day it just did not want to run. The ignition is working cause I turned the key but it idles rough and dies out. Me and my dad thought it was the timing was wrong cause of the back firing from the intake, we replaced the timing gear's and chain, and everything and still does not want to run. It can barely stay alive at 1600 rpm using the gas pedal, we've checked the fuil pump which works and the pressure thinking it was losing pressure though the pressure is fine. Please help me find the problem We've ran out of ideas of whats wrong with it. Any info helps...

Oh ya I forgot to mention that we also checked and changed the distributor cap, rotor base, " basically the whole thing" Thinking it was something simple. also we did a diagistic and it readed 3 5 5 I do not know what that means though we only have bits and pieces of a manual for that model.

Distributor position determines when injectors
send fuel , timing is determined by crank sensor
in bell housing - passenger side - just below distributor .
Possible fault with EGR valve/solenoid
-passenger side near distributor.

I'm back I been trying different things like changing O2 sensor, map sensor and alot of different "shoot in the dark" methods and nothing has been working, we even cut the cat thinking it could be blocked, "seen that happen before" and nothing is working. Was able to start it and make it sort of run, though will die down and stall when to cold or after the engine has been working for a while, "when its nice and hot" I do have another post on dodge forum under the dakota first gen section under the name of gladiator, Please we definetly need some help and input. And please check the other site cause I give way more information on that post then this, it is alot to write done thx.

The codes I got are 12 17 24 27, we change about every sensor, power coil, rewired everything, new ignition wires just in case, and alot more "shot in the dark method" still basically does the same thing though only runs bad during cold starts, colf acceleration "foot to pedal" and when the truck is nice and "hot". Still confused as ever with wat is going on here need some serious input thx.

Most people here just want to flame and insult, as you can see. A few will help.

When you got "3 5 5" codes, that was most likely a code 12 and 55.

Now with additional codes, indicating Coolant taking too long to warm up, Throttle Position Sensor, Fuel Injector shorted or open, it suggests that your timing chain job caused a few problems.

Either the thermostat is stuck open, or the sensor wiring is loose or damaged. Both the gauge sensor and the coolant temp sensor are next to the thermostat.

Throttle position sensor is on the side of the throttle body. Check its wiring connection. If you have a multimeter, turn ignition on without starting, and probe the center wire to ground. At closed throttle it should be about 0.8V and wide open throttle about 4V, changing smoothly as you open it. Also, you can unplug it and check with an ohmmeter to see if the resistance changes smoothly, or if there's a dead spot. Even if it tests good, sometimes it causes low or rough idle, even with no apparent fault.

The fuel injector wiring should be checked, also. Check especially all ground wires on top of the engine and to the firewall.

When you did the timing chain and dist, did you check that the engine was at #1 TDC and the rotor was right at cyl 1, pointing to the scribed mark on the edge of the dist housing? If you were not within a few degrees, the fuel injector synchronization will be off and injectors will fire at the wrong time, making it backfire, not start, or run very roughly.

Finally, a bad battery (low voltage or low ampacity) can cause rough idle and poor running. Have the battery load-tested and make sure the clamps and posts are clean, and wires intact. Don't just eyeball them, remove clamps and clean.

If none of that makes a difference, check EGR valve to see if it's open at idle - it should not be. First, plug the vacuum hose to it and see if it runs fine. If no change, reconnect. Pull on the valve stem with pliers to see if it stalls out, or no change. If no change, it was stuck open. You then need to clean the orifice and replace the valve.

Hey guys thx, for the help I believe to have find the problem and I fixed it with your guys help. I went to check the distrubtor and notice that it had about a 1/8 of a wobble to it, believeing that would be enough to maybe jump fire the spark to a different location, and that fixed the problem for losing power and also noticed that it did not backfire which is good. Thx guys for the good ideas and for some laughs "bob" and "lol" and bob if I have problems again I will be back on the site though you will probably see some new post on custom style for what I am doing on this truck wish me luck.

Have a 99 and its dead. Turn on ignition and no gauges, no
check engine light and the odometer displays mileage for a
few seconds. Then it flashes 4 times before changing to
displaying no bus.
