Subject: Radiator fan & A/C problem

Howdy!

I've got a 2004 Dakota Quad, and it's developed two interesting (and related) issues:

1) the radiator fan NEVER comes on. if I'm idling at a light, the temp goes up, "Check Gages" light comes on, but fan never engages. when I start rolling again, engine temp goes down.

2) the air conditioner only cools if I'm moving--air blows out whenever the A/C fan is on, but the air isn't cold. BUT, when I start moving, the air cools down (to a VERY cold temp). This behavior is the same whether I start the truck and immediately drive or if I run for an hour or so and then stop at a stoplight--if I'm not moving, the AC isn't cooling.

I haven't done current testing on the fan, but my guess is that it's the electric fan, or maybe one of the relays/electricals, and since the fan's not running, the condenser sensors aren't detecting air flow and are inhibiting the compressor?

Anyone have an experience like this?

It's the electric fan. It should come on for 2 reasons. 1st: Demand for A/C and engine temp above 130degF. 2nd: Engine temp @210 degF.

You can swap the cooling fan relay with another to see if it's the relay. To check the fan motor you should be able to disconnect power to it and run power to the fan direct from the battery for a few seconds. If that doesn't work it's definitely the fan motor. Check fuses also.

I've got an '00 with about 130k on it and the fan motor is still kicking. In fact I've been running it without the mechanical fan for years now with no problems.

Where is the cooling fan relay for a 2004 Dodge
Dakota 4.7 V8? Can you test the relay or simply
replace it?

Thank you

Its the electric fan, just replaced mine. 04 4.7L 130,000. $100 bucks and it takes 2 hours to replace. You can check the relay under the hood and the fuse, the lid is labeled.

The relays are the same just switch them, and see if that works the fan and the problem moves to fog lights or wherever you switched the bad relay to.
