I have a 1998 dodge dakota V6 160000 miles when I am cruising down the interstate running about 65 to 70 mph and I let off the gas pedal then the truck will downshift from overdrive to 3rd and go from running 2200 rpm in overdrive to 3000 or so in 3rd and then sometimes stay in 3rd and not shift back to overdrive. Other times if I floor it and let off it will shift back into overdrive until I let off again. Also I have ABS light and brake light illuminated on dash but my speedo is working fine. I have read numerous posts on here about ways to go about fixing this problem and none have worked.

First I changed the IAC and the TPS neither worked also I have changed both speed sensors the one on tranny and the other on rear differential. I have also checked the transmission fluid just have not replaced it yet I have heard its not a wise decision to replace it on such high mileage vehicles.

The transmission seems to shift really well in town but hardly ever goes into overdrive. And also the O/D switch seems to be working when I press the button it shows up O/D off then when I press again the light goes away.

Any help would be appreciated thanks in advance

Check for fault codes.

Could be the TPS wiring, not the sensor. And sometimes the solenoid pack screws begin to loosen, and the pack begins to separate from the valve body in the tranny.

The solenoid is that something that I can fix or do you have to pull the transmission to fix that. I did not have a volt meter but I did use a test light and checked the tps and the light was really dim.

The solenoids are accessible by dropping the tranny pan.

But first, backprobe the TPS with a voltmeter with engine off, key on, and sweep from closed to wide open throttle. Should be roughly 0.7V to 4V, smooth and steady increase.

Thanks for all the help! I have been driving it the last few days and it has been shifting really well. I have not been on the interstate for a few days but it seems that is the only time it acts up like around 65 to 70 mph. But in the 40 to 50 mph range it stays in overdrive and only downshifts when coming to a stop or kicks into passing gear. Has anyone experienced this before?

I had a buddy run a test on it today with a scanner and it brought up code P0753 3-4 shift. Anyone know what could be causing that code to show up?

I looked through the forum about adjusting the TV cable to the tranny. The posts I looked at were about 6 years old and link they were linking about adjusting the cable were no longer available. I looked on youtube and found a video that told how to adjust the TV cable here is the link...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nral3oYui_w

It seemed to fix my problem. For anyone that is looking for a how to adjust the TV cable this video does a great job of telling you how to. Thanks!

Have a 1997 Dakota 3.9L auto that is dropping out of O/D after getting hot. If driven further in 3rd gear, I had the transmission light come on the dash stating transmission is hot. Shut it down and let cool. Drive for short run but O/D is working and no more lights on dash
