Subject: '04 manual trans.. one last bolt!
IP: Logged

Message:
Have a bad throwout bearing and am dropping my tranny. Got the cats off the headers, the starter, the center diff.. all that jazz.
Now I backed off all the bolts from the block to the transmission. The bottom pulls away, but seems hinged up at the top. For the life of me, I can't find that last bolt.. I have felt all around the top of that bell (still in the engine compartment) There are spots where lines and wires block viewing, but I thought i covered those OK. Anyone have a diagram or a picture so I can count (or line up) bolting positions?
Thanks in advance!

There are a couple of places it could be. One the passenger side at just above the exh. manifold there are some wires that are held in place by a bolt and bracket that holds the wires and it goes through the bell housing and into the engine block. Because of the wires it may be hard to find the bolt, especially if the bracket is bent over the bolt. If you were looking at the back of the engine out of the truck it would be close the 2'o clock possition.
The other possibility is on the drivers side close to the 11'o clock either on can cause the problem you are having.
Good Luck

Awesmome Dakota49! I did end up finding the last bolt. It was on that bracket that holds the lines and wires. I went to the dealership (because there was a bolt hole in the tranny at the 12 o'clock position with no bolt) and they printed me a breakout diagram of my transmission. There is an extra bolt hole in the tranny but nothing on the block to recieve anything. In that process, I saw by the diagram the missing bolt. The bracket on mine, however, is on the driver's side.
When I got that tranny down, the throwout bearing was torn apart. The clutch itself looks barely worn. I noticed one of the retainer clips was snapped off the bearing. It came out before I dropped the tranny when I took out the slave cylinder. I couldn't figure out what this clip looking thing came from, so I set it aside with the slave cylinder. I think a combination of the retaining clip coming off the throwout bearing and binding (or became trapped) in the slave cylinger area is probably what did it in (not allowing the bearing to completely release).
Figuring that the clutch would disengage before within a 1/4 travel of the pedal, I figured I didn't need to shim the flywheel after getting it machined. Hopefully, It will still have enough travel for the new one to work.
We'll see!!
Thanks again Dakota49!
