Hello, got an 89 3.9 and I've been chasing a rough idle/stalling problem for some time and came to notice that when I put the timing light on, even after disconnecting coolant temp sensor, that my timing mark wavers from between 12 and 7 TDC or so during idle and it idles rough. Replaced the distributer, no vacuum leaks, but did notice that my rotor slops in the twisting axis like the slot in the top of the dist drive shaft gear is worn. Possible cause of the rough idle? The bushing is new because the block is brand new but I didn't replace the shaft. Any thoughts?

As for the bushing being new that would only depend
on how trustworthy the machine shop was.
(take nothing for granted)

But yes a worn bushing and/or drive gear would cause
your problems. It would also cause the motor to run
weak.
(make note though pre mag 3.9s didn't have a whole
lot of power to begin with)

What shape is the timing chain in? And if you just changed it, did you add the tensioner?
