 Subject: Strange -- Won't Start Suddenly

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakota with a 3.9L V6. The check engine light came on and within a couple of weeks my truck would not start. When I stick the key and turn it to the run position there are two beeps, the speedometer flashes 3 times and then displays a message 'No Bus'. When I try to crank it up it just keeps cranking but will never start. Anyone seen this before? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Check all grounds
1 Engine to frame
2 frame to body
3 body to battery
Make sure they are clean, (remove them)
and re-tighten all.

I have put on new battery terminals. I will try to redo the grounds for the engine,frame, and body and see if that works.
Anyone know of any other possibilities?

No Bus means no communication with the ECM. So there is a connection problem to the ECM.

So I might need a new wiring harness which hooks up to the ECM? Is the ECM the main computer for the truck?

This was talked about on the V8 board months ago.
It turned out to be a ground problem 90% of the
time!

Sure nuff that taking the bus joke is funny.....that is until you have to travel 24 hours on one......I'd rather cruise on my own truck

I've taken all the ground wires loose and sanded the areas of contact for the grounds between the body,engine, and frame. They were tight and there was no corrosion.
Where do I start at finding the connection problem with the ECM?

Check the battery. It will crank but not have enough power to start the computer. that happened to me on my 2000 Dodge Dakota V6.

I just went through this myself. It is the ECM.
You can pay about $1000 from the dealer or order one from www.autocomputerexchange.com. It cost about $265 and is already programmed when it arrives. Just swap it out and done!

I don't think you can remotely state with certainty that it is the ECM. There could still be ground or connector issues, which are virtually free to fix.

You are right Bob, all other possibilities should be checked first.
You may also want to check under the dash where the emergency brake is. There is a wiring harness that is extremely close to the gears on the brake and sometimes cuts or shorts a wire.
From my research, No Bus is most likely the ECM, as it was with mine, but it could be caused by faulty wiring, ground, instument panel, or the crank position sensor. You should rule out all of these things first.
