I have a 93 dakota v6 rwd automatic. My problem is that my truck overheats most of the time when i drive it and then sometimes it doesn't get up to operating temperature. I pressure tested the system and it does NOT leak at all. Both temperature sensors (dash and computer), radiator, water pump, thermostat, heater core, belt tensioner, and the belt itself are new. The radiator is full. I keep trying to fix the problem with no success and i've run out of ideas as to what the problem could be. And yes i know the heater core wouldn't be related to the problem so don't bother asking why it was replaced. Please help because i'm really getting tired of this.
Thanks

Make sure there is no air trapped in the system and check the clutch fan.

Well i'll bleed the system and the within the next couple of days air somehow gets into the system. And i pressure tested it on tuesday and it didn't leak AT ALL. And this is where i'm stumped, the only thing that i can think that it would be, is the intake manifold gasket. But it didn't leak and doesn't idle weird. Could it be the gasket or is it something else?

I would try using a Infrared/Laser Thermometer next
time it "heats over". New sensors or not they might
not be working properly. My 2nd thought, Plate
behind water pump rotted out.

I did back flush the heater core and i still have the plug on the hose that comes with the kit. Could that be leaking air into the system?

My Advive:

Remove the thermostat and leave it out, take radiater cap off and see if the coolant is flowing. If it does change the thermostat.

Well i know the t-stat should and i know that air is getting into the cooling system because i blead it saturday and air bubles were coming out of the top of the radiator. And when i drove it around this weekend the temp guage was all over the place. It would overheat, so i pulled over to let it cool. Then when i took off again, it never got to operating temp

Define it!

Is it boiling over, Steaming or gauge way over in
red?

My definition, running much hotter than where it has been running since i've own the truck. It's been much hotter but the coolant isn't boiling. Now this is according to the guage. I don't have the money to buy a thermal lazer, but i know that air is getting into the system.

PULL ALL PLUGS, PRESSURIZE RADIATOR, CRANK ENGINE, IF HEAD GASKET IS BAD , WATER WILL SHOOT OUT OF 1 OR MORE CYLINDERS, A HEAD GASKET WILL LEAK BETWEEN 2 CYLINDERS.ALSO FLUSH COOLING SYSTEM , PULL THERMO, PUT WATER HOSE IN UPPER HOSE AS WATER RUNS FROM TOP OF BLOCK TO BOTTOM, THE WATER PUMP , PUMP'S THE WATER FROM THE BOTTOM OF RADIATOR, THROUGH THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE, AS THE THERMO OPENS ,IT WILL CIRCULATE THROUGH OUT THE SYSTEM.

Alright guys thanks for the advice. Im going to try one thing before i go after the head gaskets. I think the fan clutch may be bad because i never hear the fan kick in at all while im driving. My guess it that while it's idling it overheats and pushes water out into the overflow resivoir but doesn't suck it back up when it cools down, causing air to be in the system. If this doesn't work i'lll tackle the head gaskets

Just replaced the fan clutch and now it doesn't overheat and found a leak in the resivoir and fixed that and those two fixes fixed everything. Finally a break, now i only have another dozen things to fix. Wish me luck

Karen,

If I were you, the next time it starts to overheat turn the heat on full blast! If it starts to cool down then odds are it's the radiator.

The heater works by using a heater core. It's a small radiator basicly. So give that a try and then go from there.

Thanks Steven i know that, but i cant remember if it did much in cooling it down though,i'll wait and try again.just didnt know if maybe its (rad) clogged or if the temp sensor could be going out,or the (rad cap).I think i may get my buddie at the local parts store to run a pressure test to rule out a small leak or and small opening allowing for steam vapor to exscape slowly, and that allows for the loss of fluid with no signs of a regular leak.Just thought since you guys been posting since 2010 about it {seems a common thing with the dakotas},ya'll might have found a reason.I'll keep ya'll posted on my findings Thanks again.oh by the way A.S.E. grad 1983,but didnt stick with it due to treatment from male co/workers,so sad was male {father}trained.

Do the pressure test. If it's not holding pressure it will overheat.

Can you feel pressure in your upper radiator hose?

Any Leaks?

Does the level in your overfill go up and down with the engine changing hot to cold? If you open your radiator cap, is it filled up to the top(Don't do this when its hot)
