I own one of the aforementioned 3.9 liter v6 Rams (not a Dak) and I love the truck. I think the problems w/ it are more about engine bay mods being done w/o any other mods. Like someone said earlier, you have to know how to get the horsepower to the wheels. I have a throttle body conversion, manual transmission, rearend diff. changeover, etc. planned long before I track down an S/C. And as for the comments about "why bother" with a v6? Simple: that's what I own and it'll be cheaper than getting someone to drop in a rebuilt motor, THEN running a hotcam, then porting, heading, etc...esp. since all of those parts are cheaper on my v6 than on the subsequent v8. Likewise, I'm looking to do well at the track, not pull 10 seconds. If I want 10 seconds, I'll do what everybody else does and buy a turbocharged 4 cylinder or a blown muscle car. But I don't want that...I want to be original, I want to be me, and I want to do it with the truck I already own. That's the point w/ most of us running v6's, it's about not having the same Honda Civic or 80's model Chevy truck or 1972 Camaro. It's a Dodge Ram, with the original motor (albeit modified). And no one ever expects...The Spanish Inquisition...or a v6 Dodge Ram that can tear a stock Mustang or Camaro to pieces.

KRC Performance has a Vortech system specifically for the V6 and Powerdyne has a supercharger for the 5.2/5.9 that is easily modified to fit the 6. The mod requires a small hole to be cut in the fenderwell. From my knowledge of centrifugal superchargers they dont begin to build much noticable boost till after 3000 rpm. For daily driving how many of us are revving ours trucks up into that range? If there would be boost at 2000-2500 Id be all for this.

you dont have to cut a hole... you just have to hammer down part of the inner fender well so that the s/c doesnt rub against it. If you do get a s/c, then you will find out first hand where to hammer.

if all you wanna do is beat your friend, then get some nitrous... a lot cheaper and if used correctly, just as safe.

Slow down there skippy! As for going to an 8 I'm sure there are plenty of high dollar parts that you'd need to buy that you cant pull off your 6 and reuse. Computer, fuel system, and so on. If all youre looking for is to beat your friends then do nitrous as was previously posted. Its cheap and just as effective as big dollars mods. Educate yourself on its use though.

Simply......No new heads for the supercharger.

Scour junkyards for a low mileage 318. Around here junkyards are extremely scarce and Id never be able to find one. I dont think 318 comes as a crate engine so youd be building it up from the block unless youre comfortable with putting in a junkyard 318 as is.

Nitrous doesnt limit you to just beating Hondas. Face the facts........you wont be beating any 400 Horsepower Camaros with a 3.9. If you could even squeeze out 400 ponies you still weigh a helluva lot more. Do some searches for specific things that you feel you want to get done to your truck rather than rambling on and having it all spoon fed to you.

Last time............I highly doubt you'll be doing any engine swaps on your own so get a nitrous kit installed. Its cheap and very effective. Once again........READ up on it.

24 hours ago you were asking for prices and where to get a 318. You started posting looking for superchargers and whatever else for your V6. So you dropped all interest in the 6 and bought an 8 all in one day without the slightest knowhow of where to begin. Fascinating. Why do anything to the 6 if you'll be pulling it when the 8 is done to your liking as you say?

bradacust, you will need to do some underhood wireing changes for the v-8. since it's fuel injected and your truck has the 6 your missing a couple of injector conections...minimum . also the ecm is different and possibly the harness locations for some of the sensors may be in different locations. the least expensive way out is to fnd the underhood harness and ecm out of another truck ,same year ,model ,rear axle, trans ,etc out of another ram truck. bear in mind, the ecm's are calibrated for spesific equipment so make sure everything is the same as yours...just with the v-8. looking for the same stuff for my 96 Dakota.having a hard time because its the first year for obd2 and the last year for Gen2 Dakatas. got a redheaded stepchild so to speak. also if your truck has a tach in the dash, it will be calibrated for a 6 not an 8 and you will need to either replace the cluster with a v-8 , or get a resister to recalibrate the tach. can't tell ya what the resister ohms rating is but it can be done.... good luck Bill

Bill Smith: I dont think bradacust/dodge man (same guy) will understand a thing you're saying. However I do appreciate the post. It's more and more rare that there's anything informative on these boards anymore. There's been a huge influx of "what oil, what muffler, and where can i" questions but rarely is there anything that can help someone who is a bit more automotively advanced than most. Thanks!

Are you still under warranty coverage? If you are and the truck isnt deemed to have been negelected then Dodge would cover it. Either way I think you'd have to get the 4.7 from Dodge. Ca-Ching! $$$$$

thanks Goodyear, yeah the SMAK talk on this forum is really gettin out of hand lately. Like I said before a dealership is your best resource right now for getting an entirely new engine. Labor rates and the inflated dealer engine price might deter you from going that route though. Since the truck is sitting and I'll assume you have other wheels to get around in you might as well pull it and fix what you can. You've got the time so do it right.
