Subject: Oil Gauge Fluctuates
IP: Logged

Message:
Hi guys!
My 2WD Dakota has a 3.9 with 115K miles on it. Until a few days ago, the gauge stayed steady at the mid-way point. Now, it varies from the nominal point on the left to the center. Rest assured, I DID check my oil level and it was near the max level. I was told by a mechanic that, due to normal wear on the engine, the oil doesn't get to the sensor as it heats up. Any thoughts on this? He checked the electrical connec-tions and said they were fine. Is he right that, eventually, I'll need to rebuild my 3.9? Or is it possiible that the oil pump just may be bad and need replacing? I'd appreciate your input. Thanks.

Did your mechanic remove the oil pressure sending unit and put
a mechanical oil pressure gauge to measure the oil pressure?
These oil pumps have had the same design since the sixties, the
oil pumps dont fail, some mechanics do.
If you have the correct oil pressure, then test your sending unit
to the gauge on the dash.

The factory gauges are not very accurate. Have you
ever watched your tach closely?

The correct advice was given above. Remove sending
unit put a mechanical gauge on for a correct
reading. If all checks out well install a new
sending unit. The pump or pick up screen could get
clogged but these pumps don't fail.

Oil pump screen pluged up from not changing oil.

Your mechanic needs to be terminated!
