Subject: Temperature of engine
IP: Logged

Message:
I just did a bunch of work on my truck. It's a 93 dakota sport, v6, rwd, automatic, with 150,000. My problem is the engine, when i got the truck, would warm up to half and stay there. Now it warms up and gets hot and goes to 3/4 over to the right and then kicks in. I've replaced the thermostat twice in the past week because i thought that was the problem. It also has a new radiator, radiator cap, water pump, and a new heater core. Any suggestions or is this suppose to happen?

Hi,

It sounds like you have a air pocket some where!

Take the radiater cap off when engine cold than let the engine run for 20-30 minutes, the air should make its way out of the system.

Are you sure its overheating? Have you replaced the sensor for the temp gauge?

Forseti is right check the temp sensor first.
You should also make sure the rad cap is the correct pressure. If it's too low you'll get what's called "hot spots" in the heads.

Is there something i should be doning while it is running? Because i did try letting the air out of the system by letting it run for about a good 30 minutes, when i put in the new heater core (my truck is the one that started the "I have no heat" post next to this one). And do i need to do this a couple of times in the next couple of days to get ALL of the air out of the system?

Steven .... have you replaced the sensor yet ??? Do that first before you waste your time and money on bigger parts. As for "Bleeding the air out" what a crock of crap .... I have NEVER had to do that to any of my dodge trucks

I replaced both temperature guages last year. Both being the one that goes to the dash and the one that goes to the computer. I checked the new radiator cap and its rated at 16. Is that right? Because i got it at Autozone and they're usually good at giving me the right parts but i just want to be shure.

Hey D.Brown changing the T-stat on a 93 3.9 doesn't get any easier. If you can't figure it out by looking at it then you seriously should take the truck to a garage.

To D.Brown, just a piece of advice, you're going to want wd40 or a similar product and wrenches so that you don't strip you bolts holding the upper hoses. And people i just blead the system again this afternoon and i believe it is still doing the same thing. Now with out arguing with each other, does this mean that i need to bleed it a couple of times this week or is there something else?

Hey i just figured it out. I remember when i took off the old thermostat that there was a pit where the thermostat sits. I now know that there is air in the system because when i opened the hood i heard a sound that sounded like an air leak from the thermostat. Thanks for the help, i just need to get a tig welder to fill in the pit or replace the intake manifold. Either way this sucks

A pit? is it something so large that some rtv won't seal it up? If you do try rtv, remember to try to have it not go into the thermostat. Also, if you're going to try and weld the intake manifold, keep in mind that it is aluminum, and not steel.

Forget the 'air' nonsense , it would disappear within the first 30 minutes..
How are the connectors to those sensors ?
Also possible some other electrical issue that is skewing the guage .
Have you ever done anything with that splice under the fuse/relay box ? about 6 to 8 inches down the harness , of three or four wires..

The only thing tha i've done with the temperature guage is replace both of them. I know that it's air getting in the system because i bleed the system on sunday and it worked great, the temp guage stayed where it was supose to and worked great. BUT, by wednesday the temp guage was getting 3/4 hot and then would got to 1/4 hot and the heater wasn't working like it was on sunday. So I know as a fact that air is getting into the system through the intake manifold and that the temp guages are just fine. Thanks

Are you losing any coolant?
It sounds like a head gasket or intake gasket leak. The sound of air coming from the cooling system is the cylinder pressure escaping.

I had the exact problem on my 92 Spirit. I lost very little coolant, except sometimes the cap would relieve pressure due to the engine pressurizing the cooling system.
On the highway the gauge would run @ 3/4. Lift off the gas and the temp would drop.
Around town running the A/C would run the fan enough to keep it cool. Eventually nothing helped.

My money is on a gasket.
