I have been having problems with my tranny lately. Everytime it shifts it basically slamms into every gear. I have a 2002 Dodge Dakota 3.9L 4X4 with under 70k miles on it. I just bought it in August from a guy but I felt the tanny acting up at the time. Also there is an occasion when I have been driving it for awhile and put it into reverse it will die on me. I start it up put it in reverse again and its fine. So any tips on what i could do to possibly stop the hits in the tranny and stop it from dieing on me????

First, Is the fluid level in the tranny OK? Next, A fluid/filter change on that tranny is probably overdue. And don't forget to use ATF+4 fluid. Try that

Well went to O'Reilly's and got the filter and fluid. I never seeen the filter under the pan and thought they knew what they were doing. Well i guess i cant say its their fault. I have the Canadian made truck with a 14 boltpan instead of the 15. So the filter would not fit. I changed the fluid anyways and i have a little better shifting then before. In the morning I will change the filter and find out how it goes from there.

"changing the fluid and NOT the filter"

That would be like showering and putting the same dirty underwear back on.

the only reason i changed the fluid and not the filter is because none of these auto parts places have what i need. my truck originally came from canada so they have to special order this filter. a load of crap.

You must really live in the boondocks that your auto pars supply doesn't carry the filter. Its the same filter for the 42,44,46,and 47 RE transmissons that you find in
97-03 dakota,durango
97-06 Ram,Ram Van
97-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee
Here are the part numbers
OEM 52118789

Purolator P1262

You can also use the old style filters that were in the older Torqueflight A500, A518 transmissions in the older Dakotas,Ram,and Ram Vans
OEM: 3515996, 8123042
FRAM: FT1039,

RE: stall in reverse

CHeck the IAC on the back of the throttle body. If it gets caked with gunk, it will stick and cause the rpms to dive. Mine would almost stall everytime I would put it in reverse, but after GENTLY cleaning the IAC with intake cleaner, it stopped doing that.
