My steering seems a little sloppy and I don't see anything in the Haynes manual about making an adjustment on the steering box.
This Summer I changed out some tie rods that were shot, power steering pump is new, ball joints seem alright.

Sounds like a joke, but I'll play along.

Okay, what's a "rag joint"?

Steering Shaft Coupling, it connects the steering shaft from inside the truck to the rack or steering box. It's a flexible joint and they do wear out.

When you get a chance give us an update. If you can't find the joint or still unsure let me know. I can try and get a picture and post it somewhere.

I looked under the hood and found the rag joint. I grabbed the steering shaft and twisted it back and forth and the joints seemed fine.

Does anybody know what the adjustment screw/nut on the steering box is for? Haynes manual doesn't show what it is for.

Have you checked the pitman arm? I have a '96 that at one time had so much play i could move the steering wheel 5-6 inches without actually turning the vehicle.(!) I had just changed the ball joints and inner and outer tie-rod ends. It ended up being the pitman arm. The joint in it was so worn that it would rattle around...yikes! After I replaced that, my steering felt like new.

Its been a while since ive worked on the steering system on a 1998 4X4 but if I remember correctly you do not have a rack & pinion like a 2wd. You have a steering gearbox. If you look at it you will see a sort of setscrew with a pinch nut around it. Keep the screw from turning and loosen the pinch nut. now turn the screw clockwise about a half turn and re tighten the pinch nut. check the play in your steering ... it should have gotten better ...

That's what I hoped it was. Years ago I used to play with old VW bugs and that's how you would take the slop out of the steering box.
I'll give it a try and let you know how it turned out.
