Hey guys,
I've got a 2003 V6 2WD Dakota. It's got about 78,000 miles on it. Ever since I got it (24,000 miles), it's made a pretty loud whistling noise from the engine compartment when I drive down the highway. It only does this when the outside temperature is 40 degrees or colder and it seems to be more frequent when the engine is still a little cool. It also only makes the noise when the engine is under load (foot is on the accelerator). It stops as soon as I take my foot off. I've tried to pin it to a certain RPM but it doesn't seem to really matter. It happens anywhere from 1000 to 3000 RPM. I'm thinking it's some kind of vacuum leak but I don't really know how to check. Anyone else have this problem or know how to go about fixing it? Thanks.

PS- Is 78,000 miles too early for a water pump failure? And should I go ahead and replace the timing chain while I'm replacing the water pump?

Common problem that people often complain about, but never post a resolution. I have the same issue and have been trying to pin point it forever. I have read that it is caused by the bearings in the alternator, but have not been willing to fork out the cash to replace it. I have been also told by a dealer shop that it was the intake manifold - again, not willing to dump money at solutions that "might" fix the problem. Alot of people tend to go down the vacuum leak route, but never come up with anything. If you find out any more about this problem, please post it here.

Search the web - you will get a million hits about this problem; I have read every one and none state what the actual problem was or how it was fixed.

Well that's awesome. Thanks for the reply though. I guess I'll
probably just live with it. I'd still like to do a vacuum check
because it also idles a little rough. Thanks again.

By the way, I didn't post the above message 'bump'. I don't
even know what that means.

My water pump when out at 81K and yes I'd do the timing chain while your in there. If you are sending it out your machanic might say don't worry about the chain. But your so close, only a timing cover away at that point. Saving you the double labor of removing eveything twice if you don't do the chain. Oh and don't forget a chain tensioner, the v6's need them.
