Hello,

I'm a new owner of a '90 Dakota got it for $450. Has Roughly 177k miles on it. Over the past monththat ive had it, i've been noticing that my engine stalls out when i put my truck into reverse and turn the wheel sharply, after a heavy Down pour when i stop and turn the wheel going Forward the engine sometimes stalls, and on long drives and even short drives when i come to a stop the Engine Sputters and sounds like it wants to stall but then Kicks back in.

I did get it tuned up when i first got it and had a faulty oil pressure sensor replaced. Any Info that can Lighten my Situation would be Much appreciated.

Thanks

Steven grab a pen and paper and head to your truck. Make note when we say key on it means all the way forward just short of turning the motor over. Now turn key on-key off, key on-key off, key on..
Watch the check engine light inside the dash. it will start a series of flashes, Each flash represents a number.

Example 1 flash pause 1 flash = code11
5 flashes pause 5 flashes = code55
another note, all codes are 2 digit numbers

Jot them all down and post them here.

The key trick should work on a '90. 12 will be the first code. It just means that the codes are being checked. The last code will be 55 which means end of codes.

Hi Steven
OK 55 is end of codes, Meaning if no codes prior to that then there are none stored. I'm at a loss on this.
That ticking sound if it went away was most likely a lifter or rocker arm.
daddio any ideas?
Be nice if Larry looked in on this thread too.
I wouldn't think fuel pressure as it's only at low rpm's.
Keep checking back Steven I'm sure the other guys will have some ideas.

"12 will be the first code. It just means that the codes are being checked." Nope. It means battery recently disconnected. There is no start of codes message, just end of codes (55).

Steven, sometimes this is caused by a faulty Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), mounted on the side of the throttle body. The sensor can be bad, or just the contacts in the plug can be dirty. Unplug and plug it a few times, and if it doesn't get better, replace it. Two screws and a plug, costs about $30. They often give hot stalling issues at idle and restart.

The EGR valve stands for Exhust Gas Regulator, on a 90 3.9L V6 it is mounted on the driver side of the intake manifold and has some rubbr lines hooked up to it. It's right under the throtle linkage has two bolts holding it in.
The magnetic pick-up is in the distributer housing and has wires coming out of it that go to the ignition, this unit electronicly replaced points in the distributor, from your questions it sounds that you maybe a beginner to the automotive repair world. so asking a lot of questions is good to aid you in yor indevers go to your local auto parts store and buy a repair manual for Dakotas there around 20 bucks or so this will help you idenify things and give a lot of info to work with. hope this helps you out.
