Subject: 30,000 tune-up?

Can anyone tell me why my dealership wants to charge $800 to do a 30,000 mile tune-up? Is this something a normal gearhead can do?

3.7 liter? Coil over plug system so no wires, rotor or cap. Plugs and PCV should be about it. 20 bucks in parts and less than an hour so, NO not 800 bucks worth. What does your owners manual call for @ 30K?

My maintenance schedule calls out the regular oil change, tire rotation… The only difference is spark plug change and rear diff oil changed. Apparently, these new Dakotas use 75/90 synthetic gear oil that is about $30 a quart!!! Other than that, it only calls out checking the brake linse, exhaust, air filter, hoses, etc. All of this is about $500 at one dealer near me.

Another one wanted $750 to do everything in the schedule book, plus trans. flush and filter, battery/connector service, cooling system service, and front end lube. I’m thinking I’m going to just do everything myself and pocket the $$$$$

Does a light duty truck with 30,000 miles really need the diff fluid and trans fluid changed anyway??

It's probably not imperative to change the trans fluid and diff fluid @ 30K. Some will argue against me on this but, that's what I think. As long as the trans fluid is still nice and pink and doesn't smell burnt.

"battery/connector service, cooling system service, and front end lube" ?

Battery connector Service- Loosen the clamps and clean inside clamp and post. Reconnect and I apply grease over it and no corrosion. My original battery lasted me 7-1/2 yrs.

Cooling System Service - Flush and fill. And if the original coolant is in good shape and no corrosion seen in there, Drain and Refill.

Front End Lube - What are they going to lube? There are no Grease Zerks anywhere. Maybe spray some Silicone Lube on the Sway Bar bushings.

How bout the rear diff at 30k miles? Is it worth the $100 for oil and gasket?

Can you recommend a good service manual for my 06 Dakota?

Thanks a lot for your insight. I appreciate it.

If you're still under a factory warranty, I'd follow their service guidelines. If not, 30K, to me, is a little early to service the diff unless it is a Limited Slip.

To be honest, I haven't opened mine @ 106K. Maybe I'm running on borrowed time but I don't think so.

OOOPPPS! Forgot the service manual. Try a Chilton's or Haynes. You can find them at the parts house for about 20 bucks.

Hey guys
Keep in mind if the owners manual or paper works calls for the 30,000 mile service. You need to have it done to keep warranty intact. Either by dealer or authorized service center.

Thanks guys. My truck is not under warranty anymore. I'm thinking I'll just skip the diff service as well.
