Subject: AC By-Pass/underdrive crank pulley
IP: Logged

Message:
Here's the situation, I currently have an 01 3.9l with many performance mods, but namely for this question is: I have an underdrive crank pulley on my truck and the belt is getting old and i've been considering bypassing the ac pully on the belt.

My question is, About how much performance gain will I see when I do this?

Why don't you just turn off the A/C when you want more performance? It would be a lot easier than trying to find a belt that would work, if it is even possible to "by-pass" the A/C. If the clutch on the compressor isn't engaged, you're not losing any power.

oh well i never use the ac anyway, just thought that the pulley was still holding the engine back even though the ac was turned off???

This was a typo on my part. It should have read:

If the clutch is not on/energized, the compressor isn't engaged and you're not losing any power.

thank you for the info Daddio,

i guess i was just looking for a cheap performance option, i have pulley's, 180' stat, exhaust, intake, and tb spacer.

do you know of anything i could add that would be cost effective and still get me some performance gains?

You need a V8 TB for sure. Anything from '96 & up. You may have to change your throttle cable but it's worth it. Especially if you find one for 25 bucsk like I did and I just modified the linkage on the TB.

The CPS mod is free. See if you can sell that TB spacer on Ebay because it is NOT a performance mod on these MPI engines.

Adjust the injector sync. Do some searching on here and you'll find more.

Thanks again for the info and reply!

its funny i used to visit this site all the time a few years back and was a memeber, its funny how i had heard these mods in the past and forgot all about them, now hearing again i'm more interested now than i ever were.

yeah the only thing the spacer seemed to do for me was make a cool lil whisp sound at high rpms.

----------------------------

what will a V8 TB do for me?

and what is a CPS mod?

A V8 TB, I was told could add about 15hp. Maybe increase mileage a bit, if you keep your right off of the floor.

The Crankshaft Position Sensor mod is just slotting the holes in the CPS longer so you can slide it in the oil filters direction to advance the ignition timing a few degrees.

oh sweet i'll check those out, i have an auto yard not far from my work. i'll have to see if they have one of those TB, from what i have read so far it needs to be post 1996 from a 5.2?

time to break out my dakota "everything" book (one of those books you get at the auto parts store-forgot the of the book) and find that sensor.

5.2 or 5.9 V8 TB will work. The cPS is behind the passenger side head bolted to the block and goes down into the bellhousing. Some say it's easier removing the passenger side inner fender to get to it. With my '00 3.9 5spd, I just slid underneath and had it out in about 3 minutes.
