Hi All

I have a 2003 3.9 QC 4X4 and recently when I start the truck it is very loud in the engine compartment. After about 2 -3 minutes of running it quiets down to normal. I opened the hood and I hear it mostly on the passengers side and I could smell exhaust in the engine compartment. Do I have a problem with the exhaust manifold? How hard is this to fix on the pass side?

Thanks!

I suppose it could be that (exhaust manifold) but I wonder if that
were the case, wouldnt it be ever present? My Dak is loud when I
start it up, but quiets down once it is warmed up. COuld just be
the truck warming up. (I am new to this so who knows)

If you smell it, most likely you have a exhaust leak....
Check the y-pipe connection to exhaust manifold, exhaust
manifold gaskets...or the exhaust manifold is cracked.

I took a look at it last night and it appears to be the y-pipe connection to exhaust manifold as you mentioned. What is the best way to fix this? My guess would be to take off the wheel and fender skirting and get to it that way? Is there only a gasket at that connection that needs replacing?

I dont much on the 2003 models, but you should be able to access
those 2 bolts from underneath the truck without removing
anything.....the y-pipe should have a flare at the end for it to slip
onto the exhaust manifold, you also have a flange that the bolts
slip through to hold the y-pipe to the exhaust manifold, make sure
that flange isnt to rusty or crusty....
Im not 100% sure, I dont think u have a gasket..only rice burners
have em!!
bonne chance!!

I just got around to fixing this yesterday. Come to find out the bolts connecting the y-pipe to the manifold rusted through. Trip to the store for some bolts and washers and $5.00 later = all fixed. Hardest part was cutting the old bolts out.
