My battery died yesterday, i got a boost and when the battery
was fully charged I was able turn the engine over but it would
not start. But it would keep turning over until I held down the
gas pedal. It would stay running as long as I was holding
down the gas but as soon as I let off it would die. Any
suggestions???

Remove your battery and take it somewhere to have it load tested. Any parts house can usually do this.

A weak battery can start the truck but not be able to provide enough power for the PCM to retain the idle memory.

Thanks for the advice, but i forgot to mention that the battery was hooked up to another running vehicle. So once i got it started, should it not run while the battery is being hooked up to another fully charged vehicle?

Not necessarily. No one should charge you to have your battery load tested. It's cheap insurance.

You don't mention what year or kind of vehicle we're discussing here but '96-up OBDII vehicles have very sensitive electronics.

dont think your problem is voltage, the pcm only needs 5-7 volts to function, its a failsafe system in the event of charging system failure. the problem most likely is fuel delivery, low fuel pressure,or weak fuel pump and another likelihood is the ignition coil.you may also check the pickup in the distributor, the air gap between the reluctor and the pickup could be worn, causing a wider gap, reset to .017 and try that....hope this helps

I'm pretty sure daddio is correct, having seen this exact problem on my truck twice now - exactly as described. Very common to see loss of idle memory from low voltage with these trucks. Let us know what you find.

Hi all,
Well Saturday morning, I brought the battery in for a test and it said the battery was low so the test charged the battery for 30 minutes and said “good battery”. So, Sunday morning a hooked the battery up and the truck started up nice an easy. My family and I went to the lake for the weekend (used my wife’s vehicle) until Monday night. I started the truck up when I got home and it started up again. BUT this morning before work, I go out to start the truck and it was dead. Is it possible that something is draining the battery? Or do those in store testers not charge the battery as good a good quality over night trickle charge.

Could be that one of the cells in the battery was borderline when they recharged and tested it. Now it's probably gone out completely. I've seen batteries just die all of a sudden, not that unusual.

I would hate to spend the money on a new battery to find out that something in the truck is killing the battery.

There are ways to check this with a digital volt meter. You'd just need a service manual(about 20 bucks) and the volt meter(maybe 10 bucks). Or bring it to a competent shop and have it checked out.

How old is this battery we're talking about anyway?

Honestly, I've think you've gotten your monies worth out of that one. In 30+ yrs of driving, I've had one battery last more than 5yrs. The original battery in my Dak. It lasted 7-1/2 yrs. Most last about 4 yrs.

The more electronics they put on these cars the more the batteries are taxed and harder to get them to last.

Yeah I think I’m going to stop on my way home from work and buy a new battery. But it still doesn’t make sense to me that the truck would not start this morning, when it started up last night. I didn’t drive anywhere. And why would it start last night. when it sat for a day and a half since a put the fresh ly charged battery in.

Jamie, when the original battery gave up the ghost in my truck, it did it without virtually any warning. I could tell it was weak. When I first started it in the mornings, it would crank a little slower than normal nad it would idle rough for the first few seconds. Then it was fine the rest of the day. When it finally died, it was just dead overnight.
