My tach on my 92 dakota V6(manual) is giving me erratic
readings...
When I rev the motor the tach works, but when engine idles, the
tach reads only 200rpms.
I checked the rpms at idle with a timing light, and I get readings of
700 rpms. I have took the dash out and checked and cleaned the
terminals...and still no accurate readings at idle.
any ideas??

Might need to replace the tachometer drive board. Sometimes the transistor on it will short out, killing or reducing the signal to the tach.
