Subject: Rebuilt Engine. 1st oil change
IP: Logged

Message:
Guys , if you've been reading my posts, my engine on my 95 dak was just rebuilt. Mechanic said Give it one week, and he would change the oil.

Now is the time gentleman. Going synthetic for sure, but which brand? And why?
BTW...I've read a few oil wars. Please.
Just need a good, solid, dependable oil I can't go wrong with. Mechanic's recomends Castrol or Penzoil. What are your thoughts?

Oh, and a good solid, decent oil filter. He said Fram, something that started with a "P" (can't remember but will recognize when I see it)

Please guys Help. PS...he put non-synthetic oil in when he rebuilt it simply because he said all he wanted to do was flush it out. I know about switching from one kind to the other. NOW is the time to decide. I know this, that's why I'm asking. Thank you.

I have always used Valvoline. I've been changing oil in my vehicles for 30+ yrs and have never had any major engine problems.

You mentioned going with synthetics, Valvoline doesn't make a synthetic. Whatever you use, change it per the manufacturers recommendations and use a good filter.

Valvoline does make a synthetic *blend*, however.

Any of these choices is fine. Changing often is the key, not the specific brand.

Bob, when I use the word synthetic, I use it to describe as a fully synthetic oil only. I am aware that Valvoline makes a "blend". It's not a true synthetic. And if I'm buying, I am not paying extra for a "blend".

Ok guys.....I went with Castrol Fully Synthetic.
And I had asked the mechanic about a specific oil filter and he said it really doesn't matter.

I believe he is going on all what you all have said.......change the oil when you're supposed to and use common sense.

Now, please go and respond to my error codes Post, thank you!!!!!!!!

As long as you change your oil every 3000 miles your engine will last

first of all valvoline does make a full synthetic.

Filter does make a difference. The better the filtration the better off you are. I like the mobil 1 oil filters the best. I have had no problems with them.

OK shaun, first of all what version of Valvoline is a true synthetic? Even Valvoline does not claim Syntec to be a true synthetic.

I agree on the filters anyway

Not all oil filters are created equal

I use an oversized napa gold. I think its model 1515. It is almost twice the size as the one recommended from the factory.

Not so true,
Most of todays oils can go over 3,000.

2nd you should educate yourself on the filters.
One well known brand out there is notorious for
collapsing.

Mark good choice on filters
Wix makes a great filter
Napa Gold = made by wix
They have a new filter out
some sort of spiral flow or something but,
I just stick with the original Wix or Gold series
If memory serves me correct
Filters for the older 318's fit our newer motors
and were a bit bigger
(might be what your using)

daddio I seen something awhile back on tv
They went into Valvoline
They are the only oil manufacturer with
a full engine testing facility
Showed them testing regular production engines
& all the way up to all out race motors
for their race oils

When I rebuilt my 3.9 I went til about 5000 miles before I changed to syn. I changed at one hour, I started and let it run for an hour, then changed the oil and filter, then at 500 miles, 1500 miles, and 3000 miles then again at 5000 miles. I know that sounds a little extrem, but I spent too much money rebuilding the engine to just let it go. And I also wanted to get it broke in before using the synthic oil. Just my thoughts.

1998 Dakota 4x4. I bought it used at 125,000 miles and have been using a few different synthetics like Mobil 1, Royal Purple, now I just use Amsoil because it is a little cheaper than R.P. I also use a plain old Wix filter and change it every 3-4,000 miles.
I pour this engine cleaner called "Kreen" from Kano laboratories in my engine and let it "marinate" for about 500 miles before I dump it. I only change my oil once a year. My original engine is now up to 285,000 miles and still sounds and performs well.

As far as brands go , pick a good name brand as many store brands are just relabeled , like Napa filters are made by Wics , and so on .
I worked in garages for years and would suggest waiting on any Full/Partial synthetic oils until you motor is actually broken in . While they have added protection they slow the break in time by reducing friction , stick with a conventional oil for probably the first 10k and then swap it to Mobil 1 .

IIRC Mopar oil is Valvoline and filter is made by Champion labs. (not the spark plug co)

As for Valvoline having testing facilities they used a friend's race car for oil studies when using alky as fuel.
Valvoline syn was a no-no.
