I have a 03 dakota V6 quad cab 5 speed with 33x12.5 15 tires with a 6in lift. I was wondering if 4.56 gears would be good. I will be towing a 29 ft camper trailor.I will be doing this in Aug when I get back from Iraq so I have time to get the parts I need. Thanks...

How much does that camper weigh? I think you'll run into trouble on the on ramps and ant hills. It will pull it but not very fast and not very far.

I have an '00 QC 2wd 3.9/5spd and i wouldn't consider towing something that heavy even with 4.56 gears. With 33's, those 4.56's may get you back to around 3.55's.

Larry, he wants to tow a 29 ft camper. I think he'll be hard pressed w/ a 3.9 QC 4x4 even with 4.56's and 33" tires unless it's heavily modded.

Quick question Larry, I think 4.10 gears is my next mod. What about the front? I don't off-road much if at all. just the snow and ice during the winter.

My 98 V-6 can barely tow my 17 ft aluminum bass boat, unless your towing the 29ft trailer to your neighbors house...its not gonna work too good.

Problem Child, for a 4x4, when changing gear ratios, you've got to keep both the same ratio.

I know, just can't afford to do em both at the same time. And ya know, it doesn't have to happen today, so after my fishing trip next month, I'm going to start saving for it.

Ya think it would be worth it? priced the parts, not counting labor. I don't think I want to do this on my own. It would cost more than anything at this point I have done to my truck.

You could get by with changing one set if you remove the front driveshaft but that's probably not something you'd want to do.

What size tires are you running? I've got a 4x2 QC, 5spd, 3.55's w/ 235/75/15's and if I was going to change gears, I'd go with 3.92's. I already don't use first unless the truck is loaded down or I'm starting from an incline.

I'm running 265/75/16, with a 5 speed, with the body lift seems to have quite a bit of drag on the highway.

Yeah I thought about pulling the front driveshaft off until I got em both done. I don't know what I'm going to do. I don't really know what the pro's and cons would be doing it. Just thinking.

Another thought daddio, I have a 98 Durango with a 5.2 on it's last leg. I want to pull that and go through it, and one day drop it in the truck. So I'm kinda thinking the gears towards that. I don't drive the truck everyday anymore.

I had a 95 dakota with the 5.2, 5 speed. I could kick myself in the @ss for letting it go. I miss that truck. I loved messing with those stangs. Just lay behind em, and bounce the front end, then move on around. wasn't a 4X4 but damn good truck. but that is water under the bridge.

That's a great idea. Build that 5.2 for torque if you want to tow. I here that the stroker kits for them are great. Get that thing to a 390 and it ought to have some "stump pullin'" torque.

You probably wouldn't have to worry about gears then!

You could swap everything from the 3.9 to the 5.2 then wire up for the 2 extra injectors.
