Hi Gang
I've got a 96 Dakota 4x4 and have a leak in the front passanger steel brake line at the Tee fitting. It is right at the fitting.
I have lots of slack in the line, and wondering if I cut the line next to the Tee,is there a compression type fitting I can use instead of having to but a flaring tool? I know ideally I should replace the line, but it would be a pain without a hoist.

If its leaking right at the "T" you would need to get a fitting to seal up the leak first, if you do that you may as well put on a new brake line anyway. Its really not a good idea to use other connectors on brake lines, if you have a long piece of line and its leaking in the middle, then I would use a different kind of repair, but since its leaking at the "T" I would replace the line. Just my thoughts.
Good Luck

Yea, I think you are right. I'll have to check around and see what is available for pre-bent etc. It runs under engine on the cross member and then through a bracket where it connects to the flex hose. I just thought that with all the modern day connectors that I could find a slip-on fitting so I could save on the labor.

If it's leaking at the end and the rest of the line is good then yes you can cut it off at the end with a tube cutter (slide the fitting way back on the line first

Then flange the fresh cut end with a "Double Flange"
tool

If you don't have these tools check with your local auto parts chain store (auto zone, advance auto etc. etc.) for a tool loaner program

Yea, I never thought about a loaner program.
I'll check around. Maybe Canadian Tire.
Thanks

Well, I figured I'd take this truck up to the pro's to replace the brake line.
In order to do that I figured I would unscrew the front line from the differential valve and screw a plug in the valve so I would have back brakes. The differntial valve must have failed because I have no brakes at all and both reservoirs are empty.
Anyway I cannot seem to find a plug with the proper threads to screw into the valve.
A 1/8"NPN is about the right size, but will not tighten up.
So after this long story, Is there a special thread for brake hydrolics?
Thanks

I just replaced all the brake line in my 92 Dakota, except the master cylinder lines. The line you mention is one that ruptured on me at the RF flex hose.

Buy a 72" coated brake line (PolyArmour is one brand, sold at Advance Auto). It comes straight with fittings on both ends. Just buy a $5 tubing bender and snip the old line out, and bend the new one to the same contour as the old one. With 72", you might have to put one additional coil in the line to take up excess length, but that's OK and it's easy. I put the coil inside the frame at the RF wheel. This way you don't need a flaring tool. Then you only need to bleed the brakes afterward. I strongly discourage you from driving the truck with a brake port plugged. It's unsafe and the truck will pull to one side. You can do this repair in a few hours without elevating the truck, totally safe. I did it in winter in my driveway - you can do it in this weather easily.

The brake line is 72" and is 3/16" diameter, and uses 3/8" fittings, and costs about $7.

Thanks gor the info.
I was quoted $51.00 from the dealer just for the line. Then $75.00 per hour for labor and they had no idea how long it would take.
A local auto parts store here hase 5 foot lengths available with fittings attached.
If it ever stops raining, I'll be under the truck.

The parts house may have a loaner set of tubing benders. Get that and the 5 ft of tubing and you should be set.

When you say tube bender are you referring to a small conduit bender style or the type you slide over the tube?

I maybe wrong here, but all you need is a flare tool to fix your brake line. if you have enough slack, cut it off reflare it and tighten it up, bleed em, and your rolling. why re-invent the wheel. you are making this harder than it really is.

Tube bender is the style that slides over the tubing. If there is enough slack, you can cut the tubing and flare the end but, I doubt the factory left that much tubing.

There are places that you can get pre-bent tubing other than the factory replacement pieces.
Maybe someplace like SSBC would have something.

The 6' brake line is what you need, 5' won't reach. And all you need is the $5 tubing bender, yes it looks like a conduit bender and it slips over the tubing. The 6' brake line should be about $7 to $10. Your dealer is gouging.
