I have a friend with an 05 dakota ext cab w/ 3.7 4x4. He has been experiencing problems with the steering. Started by resisting to the right and periodically "sticking" in the direction turned. Now, the steering resists in both directions, periodically "sticks" and has issues with bump steering. I just replaced the driver side lower ball joint, wheel bearing and cv shaft, and both front sway bar ends. Tire air pressure is @ 37 psi on all tires (max 44 psi) and the rest of the front end feels tight. Tires have excellent tread and no abnormal wear. The truck has just over 80k on it and fluids are at normal levels. There does not appear to be any steering leaks or air in the system except for some moisture on the bottom of the steering pump. There is not any noise coming from the power steering pump and the belt is in good condition and not slipping. Shocks appear to be OK.
I have read probably a year and a half worth of this forum and I have seen issues with steering pumps and rack units but I don't know (from the forum) what age the dakotas with the issues are. I know this is a new design dakota compaired to the early 00's and 90's, so would the issues I've read be the same? I also read about a u-joint on the steering column binding. Could this be an issue and what is the best way to determine this without ripping things apart?
I also have an '05 dakota v8 quad cab 4x4 with 40k to compair it to and I do not have any of these issues. We do not want to just start replacing expensive parts without any better ideas of what we are looking at. I think it sounds like a rack problem, but of course that is the most expensive part to replace.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated.
