check your iac. it is the sensor on the backside (near the windshield) of the throttle body. they get old and dont allow the correct amount of air through to idle. sometimes the stick and let too much through or they will not work at all make the truck stall. take off the throttle body cover and try to push the valve open with a flat screwdriver. if it doesnt move then its bad.

i personally have not had this problem but i have heard things from other people that the o ring around the IAC gets cold, hardens and lets air seep through causing the idle to jump around and when the motor warms up it expands and seals the leak. once again i have not experienced this myself but i have heard it from others and it wouldnt be a bad thing to try.

is your cam timing and what not all were its supposed to be? cause if not it would cause the distributer to fire off not at top dead center, tdc. and that would make it shake but i dont know why it would be out of time though. have you done any upgrades? the coil could be bad. when i first bought my truck i bought it used and the whole left bank wasnt firing because of the coil and that my friend shook like hell. lol it would barely run. but a tune up with coil fixed that. its worth a try

scott, have you checked for stored codes? you may also want to do a compression check.

I have a 99 Dakota, with 35,000 miles. I just got my rear axle ABS brake sensor fixed a few weeks ago, my truck has always done the thing where the RPM jumps when its sitting there. But now when i put it into gear, i barely touch the gas and it flies right up and some times the gears stick for a min. I checked oil, its fine.

Why may it be doing this?

I have the same issue with my '03 dakota. It shakes real bad right when i start it and then have to sit at a stop light. It feels like the truck just about wants to die then comes back to normal. There are no other issues and it never does die, but if there is an inexpensive fix for it what would it be?

Hey caz
Are you saying it only happens when the motor is pretty much cold, Then goes away after it;s been running for awhile?

well you guys have one hell of an issue going on it seems like. if the problem happens only on start up then the only differance between start up and normal operation is the temperature and lubrication. when on first start up you could have a lifter stick....its a far stretch but possible. once it runs for a minute and gets oil to the top half of the engine it goes away....i honestly am out of ideas but i will think on it and try to get back to you. one more thing.. you should check your voltage readings coming out of the tps with it plugged in. probe the back of the connector with a voltmeter and if the voltage jumps around on its own with no throttle then the tps is bad.
all the tps does is change resistance along the circuit witch the computer reads as throttle application. so if your voltage is fluxuating coming out of the tps then the computer is getting the wrong signals and trying to rev but it cant because the throttle plate is closed so it chokes out and wants to die.

i had the same problem and I changed out the tps iac and I also did a good cleaning of the throttle body and all the connectors going to each sensor. it stopped after that. to be honest I don't know what did it but those are the steps I took and I don't have the problem any more. I don't think it has anything to do with it but I also changed out the spark plugs and wire, changed the transmission filter, transmission solenoids, and transmission sensors. My truck was sitting for a long time before I bought it and I got it running pretty good by just doing that.

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota 2wd 6.5foot club cab SLT with 140K on it. I had an RPM issue (going up and down when warm at idle) too, check your muffler, mine had a big hole in the TOP so it was not easily visible. This, I think, resulted in varying back pressure which caused engine power loss with in turn resulted in the computer going “Shiot I need more throttle.” When the engine throttled up the back pressure was restored so the then the computer thought “shiot I need to back off the throttle because the TPS is reporting the throttle position is too open and the vehicle speed sensor is saying I’m not moving” so it returned the throttle to the idle position which then resulted in lower back pressure, engine power loss, you get the loop.
I did however follow the above suggestions I replaced the IAC, which was sticky. And I mean for about 3 years before it dawned on me to check the muffler. I also replaced the MAP, which is instrumental in the lean/rich air/fuel mixing. I also cleaned out the air throttle body incase that damn ethanol was causing it to stick. My truck isn’t a daily driver, I use it a few times a month and it mostly sits, sitting engines are more prone to the sticky throttle body due to the corn sugar in the ethanol than one that runs every day, but regardless everything gets dirty, right?
Can anyone please check my logic?
