Subject: 93 dakota 3.9 wont stay running

Message:
I have a 93 Dakota 3.9, 2wd, automatic, 180k miles.

Engine runs fine most of the time.. sometimes after it gets damp it would stall out after running for a few minutes. My first assumption was a bad distributor cap. So I replaced plugs, wires, cap, and rotor the other day.

I drove to work just now, 10 miles. Starting on the highway about 5 miles into my drive, the truck just died while doing 70mph, then restart from the transmission still turning. I get off the highway, and it stalls around the corner.

I had to restart it, keep the rpms around 3k, and drive it 50 ft or so until it quit again, for a few hundred feet.

I'm at a loss. The MAFS was replaced a year ago as well, and there is no CEL on.

Could it be the ignition coil?

"here is no CEL on". That doesn't mean there are no fault codes. Do the key dance, check codes and post.

Have you ever replaced the distributor or the distributor pickup? How about the crankshaft position sensor?

Yes , it can be the coil .
Did it 'backfire' on restarting on the highway ?

Also - check that splice under the
'underhood fuse/relay box' = about 8 inches
down the harness ( unwrap the tape to find )
splice of 3 or 4 wires = redo it , even if it
seems to look good..

It didn't backfire when it restarted.

I Think that area of the harness isn't even tape
wrapped. I recall there being a 8 inch portion or
so of that harness uncovered, about 8 inches from
the fuse box. I'll have to redo that splice once
I find it.

I'll try to pull codes from it when I can figure
out how to do it.

Then I'd change the crankshaft position sensor. It's on the passenger side bellhousing, supposedly easier to get to if you remove the right fenderwell. I think there's a paper or cardboard spacer that comes with it to set the clearance to the bellhousing.

I'm thinking the 115 splice may have been messed with before. There's an 8 inch section of the harness that has no tube or tape over it, and its a real big mess. Including a black wire with a tube on it, that's connected to nothing at one end of the tube. The empty end has signs of battery acid like corrosion in it, but I can't see where the other end may have been.

The wires pertaining to this splice are red/white stripe correct?

I'd like to sort through that mess and check for any bad connections, just trying to get a feel for what I need to find.

I ordered a crankshaft position sensor and will change it tomorrow, assuming I can find it to change it haha.
