I just got rid of a 02 Dakota 4x4 with the 4.7 V8.
It was a hard sell being it's a V8 and the price
of gas that WILL come back up sooner or later.

I just bought a 04 Liberty 4x4, 5 speed stick and
the 3.7 V6. I *thought* it would give me better
gas mileage but brother, was a dead wrong. This
thing is worse on gas than my 02 4.7 was.

I can't get any good advice at the jeep forum so
here I am asking you guys. What can be done if
anything to get better mileage with it besides
better air and exhaust flow?

I used this site for a long time when I had my
Dakota's (three of them) and always got some good
advice from most users.

So guys with the V6's, any good advice on mileage
you can pass on?

Im stuck with an 00 Dakota 3.9 Club cab and even with 3.92s its a dog. The truck is almost dangerous trying to get into 75 mph traffic. It also gets terrible gas mileage. In town mileage is better than a V8 but on the highway I struggle to get 17tops. The 3.9 is a dinosaur it should have been phazed out in the late 70s if not early 80s. My overall combined mileage average on my computer says 13.6 and thats throughout 12000 miles. I drove my buddies 4.7 200 miles once and averaged over 20 miles a gallon at 75mph and it had about 5 times the power. Theres just not much you can do for a 6cyl and a 4500lb vechicle my 3.9 cranks out a whopping 175 horses. The 3.7 im sure is the same even though it has 40+ more hp. I will never ever get dooped again by thinking less cylinders=less gas. Imma do the math first this time.

My girlfriend has a Liberty with the 3.7 and I get waaaaay better mileage with my 3.9 in my dakota then she does. Those things are just way too heavy, not aerodynamic enough and not enough power for the chassis on the liberty's. If you were looking for mileage your best bet is to stick with the 4.7 or 5.2, I mean if your engine is working less to move your vehicle your going to get better mileage.

SxtJDK03, I agree with you 100%. I also had a 3.9
in a 90 Dakota and it was a great gas sipper. Had
enough power to move the little truck also...

That 5.2 V8 I believe was the best work horse
engine built. I had a few over the years. One in
a 75 Dodge full size van and one in a 98 Dakota.

When it comes down to the REAL engines, you can't
beat 100% cast iron.
