Subject: keyless entry noise
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone had their locks and/or solenoid(s) start making a loud noise. It started last month when the temps dropped well below -0. Now the power locks make a loud noise. But its not just one. The driver side makes the noise when locking - the passenger when un-locking? Make any sense? Also - it use to unlock when you but into park - not now. Haven't had the chance to tear into the door panel yet.

Any thoughts?

2000 ClubCab 2wd w/ 3.9

Thanks
Brian

The door lock actuators are probably going bad and causing the noise. They will eventually stop working altogether. Dodge only sells the actuator and door latch as a whole assembly, you can't buy just the actuator by itself. But you can install an aftermarket door lock actuator for a lot less money. Pep Boys sells them for 10 or 12 bucks. Also you can get them at any good car audio/alarm shop, Best Buy, etc.

I have no idea on the unlock in park thing. Maybe see if your owner's manual tells how to program and set that feature thru the keyless entry remote. Maybe your cold weather caused a drop in voltage in your electrical system and it reset the keyless entry.

But its strange both actuators would go at the same time right? Is it one of those cases that if one goes bad - both go bad? Its not like its xmas tree lights!

If after the weather warms - I might get around replacing them both. For now I guess I live with the noise until I get locked in.

7 or 8 years is a good long lifetime for a door lock actuator. Maybe the cold weather had something to do with the actuators' failure too. The actuator is just a little reverse-polarity motor on the inside anyway and the noise is caused when the motor begins to wear out internally.
