I have a 97 dakota, XC 3.9 v6. When driving the temperature gauge starts to rise. I plan on fixing the thermostat. It is leaking coolant somewhere, and I think its from the water pump. On some occasions it doesn't leak and runs normal. I think the reason for it getting hot temp. wise is because there is less coolant. Have anyone else experience problems with their water pump? How difficult is it to replace the water pump also?

Look at the thermostat housing and see if there is any coolant leaking out there, I think there is a gasket there that sometimes can go out. Check there first. As far as experience with the pump going bad i've never had that happen to me, but if heard alot of people complain about Dakotas needing new pumps alot. I believe you have to take everything off the front to the motor to change it, but I could wrong.

i have replaced the water pump on my dakota. its not that hard u have you pull the fan shroud out, the fan and one of the bolts to the pump is hidden behind a pulley...i figured that out the hard way it was a pain in the ass. all in all the job isnt hard it just takes some time and as far as that gasket goes. dont put a new one on use rtv it wont leak...ever. the gaskets leak all the time though they are such a pain. Good luck

if you dont see any drip marks in the garage or drive way i may carry bad news....check your oil and make sure there isnt any antifreeze in it. if so we all know what that means...also check the padding under the carpet on the passenger floor. if wet with antifreeze have fun with the heater core...
